1720 Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure

Whenever I reboot my computer during the POST just above my COMPAQ logo screen it says "1720 Hard Drive detects imminent failure". How do I get rid of this error? Any information would be helpful.
It has been saying this for a few months. I bought a 40GB Seagate HDD and tried to use it but it said the bios could not allow it because at the time the comp was made 3x.xx was max allowable HDD space. I heard there are jumper settings to make it so the drive will be scaled down to a usable capacity. Please inform me.

Replace the hard drive. I have seen that message on many Compaq Armada series laptops; models 7400 and E500.

Can't help you with this question. We always replace drives with models that are recommended for our laptops. The majority of our Compaqs were running IBM Travelstar drives; a few of them were running Hitachi's.
