There's no denying ECS uses poorer quality components in their boards. They dont sell boards at literally half the cost of other OEM's for no good reason. I can assume your OC'ing heat/throttle problems are more a result of the ECS's poor VRM's. As for the HDD PIO problem, if you've tried everything in the book (which I assume you have)... CMOS reset, windows re-install, switching IDE channels, etc, then its probably a defective board.

The first 2 sata ports showed up as the other two IDE, and there were settigs for that, then the other two were regular sata configures as pata. Now it only sees the two real IDE devices, and after boot, it says UDMA5 for th HD, and UDMA2 for the DVD, but in wondows, no change, even after detecting and installing the "new" devices. (hence all the boots.)

Now what ?

Have you tried going into the Properites tab of the IDE channel in Device Manager, and setting it to DMA? If I recall correctly, that had to be done sometimes in Win2000.....

Well, for one thing, the Athlon64 3200 that I was benchmarking against is a fry's special with and ECS motherboard, and it doesn;t overclock even 1 mhz, since I have a sata drive in that one.

Edit, yes, under advanced properties, thats the very first place I checked, and its set to "dma if available", but thanks for the suggestion.

Well, the last thing that I would try is to download the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Here, and run it.
See if the HDD is running in UDMA independant of the OS.....

Do you have the latest version of the Intel Application Accelorator installed? Have you tried removing the hard drive conroller in device manager and letting it re-install. I had a hard drive stuck in PIO mode a while ago, there was a registry edit that corrected it, but can't seem to find it at the moment.

EDIT: See if this website helps.

Mark.

Regarding the hard drive in PIO mode you may want to follow this thread. OCNewbie has the same problem you seem to have and although they haven't sorted his problem yet it looks like a good thread to follow considering.
