18 hours to load winxp?

I had to replace the hard drive in my Dell 3000. I put in the hdd and tried to do a new install of winxp from cd.

The computer is doing everything its supposed to do but at a veeery slow pace.Its been 18 hours and the install is now down to 5 minutes remaining. At this rate its going to take another 6 hours!

Whats the problem? Do I have something else wrong with my computer? Ive replaced the cables and the hdd and thats it.Nohting seems to be too hot to touch.What else could it be?When windows does finally install will that be the end of my problems or just the beginning?

try resetting CMOS to return bios to basic settings (if you dont have jumper or anything remove the CMOS battery for a few mins)

Your CPU might be overheating. Your install disc might be bad, causing a slow read speed.

Thanks for the replies. I finally got xp installed and now when I try to install programs and such I get errors, lock ups, mem pagefile errors etc.

I still havent narrowed it down to one certian thing yet.

Try running MemTest86, see if it comes up with any errors.

Good idea!

Also hard drive sounds like it is bad. More in likly its the ram.
