The flavor is still around, Salsa Rio was just renamed as something else. (I forgot the new name) But I think it's called "Salsa". They axed the RIO part.

You show the copyright date, but not the fresheness date that is on the front of the bag in black. Can we have a zoomed in pic of that?

I believe Frito Lay only printed the month and day. It appears to say "May 9" and that bag design was around until circa 1992-1993. So those chips are probably 16-22 years old.

And would you please post that picture on Wikipedia and license it by GPL.

I work at a University. We were cleaning out a grad student area and lodged behind an old TV was a bag of Doritos, with chips still in them, FROM 1984!!!!! Whoa!!! Talk about a flashback... it was like looking back in time. For that reason, it was a pretty cool discovery, but it's also kind of disgusting considering this group of grads hadn't cleaned this area for over 22 years!!!

http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~marked/General/7.jpg

what does the freshness date say? the copyright is only applicable to the bag's design, and doesn't indicate when the bag was made.

The freshness date just says May 23, then has the price and then under that some serial number which is hard to read

Call Frito-Lay and demand they live up to their "Freshness Guarantee"!

OP, get us a better picture of the expiration date tag. I have a friend that works at Frito Lay, he can probably find out when they were produced.

The lot number should include the week and year it was produced.

Updated. Check the original post. I updated the pic with a close up of the freshness date section.

Wow, so it really is from 1984 is the expiration date is May '85.

Hell, a bag of chips from my 12th grade year.

It looks like the month and date since it clearly shows the number 23 after the month of May. Perhaps your electronic image viewing device requires some calibration. I'm sure if you squint really hard you can trick yourself into seeing an 85.

Agreed,

That being said, Current packaging looks nothing like that, and since the early 90s, the nacho cheese flavor was called "Nacho Cheesier."

Based upon the name and the packaging, the newest it could possibly be is 1992.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only idiot here.

BTW, squint real hard? Hell, with the way my vision has been slipping in my 30s everything looks like I'm squinting real hard.

On the upside, it makes dating easier.

What I meant was product names back then were for the most part sensible. Today, they choose very outrageous and ridiculuos names for products.

The date on the package is the copyright date not the date Frito Lay deep fried the corn. Go to the cupboard and look at the copyright date on the bags in your house.

I don't eat chips so I don't have any in my house but I do have a bag of Quaker Oats rice cakes (purchased last weekend) and the date on the bag is 2004. Chances are that bag of Doritos wasn't produced in 1984.

Even though with every bag redesign they always say 'now with even MORE nacho cheese flavor. But I bet the taste hasn't changed from that bag to a current bag.

Marketing FTL.

I consider myself impervious to advertising and marketing; the kind of person that PR guys know not to waste time on. Don't call me. If I want something, I have pretty specific requirements, and if you have it, I'll call YOU.

Do they still make Doritos 3D? I loved the Jalapeno and Cheddar variety.

A post earlier in the thread noted that the 3D Doritos were discontinued. That saddens me, because the 3Ds were really very good.

Aren't they the same Doritos in a different shape? It seemed like they made it that shape to reduce the number they could fit in a bag.

Not the same as regular Doritos, plus they had flavors that you couldn't get with regular Doritos.
