can a router recieve two ips and share among four computers? can computer #1 and #2 always have different IP's while #3 and #4 feed off of either IP? also... I called tech support... (he wasn't very helpful) but he did say something about going into advanced and chaning 'port'... not really sure what that is?? how do I find out my computer's port.... or is it the port of a game??? here's what I'm trying to do... have two computers play in the same game of 'starcraft'... (the basic idea... two computers can't have the same ip and play in the same game... i think)... so tech support for my router said I can, I just have to specify the 'port'. I have Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-port switch... can anybody please help??? THANKS!!!

I don't think any basic hardware routers can do this.
You could try linux. It seems to be able to do anything so if your'e up to it start reading cause I know nothing about it.

Don't understand why you would want to do that anyway.

ISP gives you IP address (whether static or dynamic) you set your router up with it and then let the router assign it own IP addresses to the other machine.

I have 9 computers at the house on a 4 port linksys router. 3 to the router 1 to the hub for other computers and 1 to the WAN. My main computer is in a DMZ for my FTP server. There is a article on setting 2 IP's to one NIC on www.win98central.com, but that is for WIN2K and its for a NIC not a router.

router sets up ip's in the network... when you get to the internet all computers are on the same ip. ex. to have mulitple computers in the same game of starcraft, each computer must have a differnt ip (on the internet). all the router does is take one ip and share it inside a network. Let me know if I'm wrong. I'm definitely no network pro (just a rookie)!

no, first off your isp only assigns you 1 ip address, you would have to connect multiple times to obtain more than one ip address. Second I believe that you can both play on the internet at the same time provided you both have legal copies of the game with different key codes, this is how it is in half life and I believe in starcraft too. I think what the guy at tech support was trying to do was have the computers connect over different ports, but that won't change anything if you are both using the same cd key.

If that were true then you would only be able to connect with one computer at a time. It hard to explain but yes they use the same IP address in a sense, but really have a routing packet, if you were to break it down you would see the IP address and the IP address where it came from. If your talking about games, then yes you will have to set up the games to use different ports. I play Tribes/HL/UT all the time through the router, and my kid uses the other machine at the same time playing those games with us.....no problem, check the site of the particular game and it should tell you how to set it up.

go to the game web site it will tell you, and the port won't be setup in the router it will be setup in the game. I don't play starcraft anymore so I haven't been to there site, but Tribes has there answer in FAQ and how to set up a server. I agree with DaiShan, router tech support can't help you unless it has to do with the router. Its not a router problem. Also agree, don't understand about games checking IP addresses, most check login's, reg codes, cd keys, etc. If your trying to connect two computers using the same copy of the game......can't help you dude.
