2 routers in one house?

I just moved into a new place with cable internet. I'm living on the third floor and the wireless router is on the second floor. I have a desktop computer that I would like to hook up to a wired connection, but it is too far away from the wireless router to run a cable.

My room has access to the cable, so in theory I could put the router up here but my roommates would rather the wireless router stay where it is. Is it possible for me to buy a second router and hook it up to the cable in my room so I can have direct, wired access to the internet without interfering with the wireless router downstairs?

Thanks!

Welcome to AnandTech Forums.

Nope you can Not Run a second computer from the cable unless the ISP is willing to open a second account.

You can try to install a Wireless card in your computer and connect to he Wireless Router.

Some thing like this might work, Edimax - PCI http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833315041

If you purchase a router like This, You can run DDWRT on it and create a Client Bridge, which will basically turn the WRTGL into a 4 port wireless network card. I use DDWRT on a WRT54GS v5 in the same way and it works great. $50 solution that will connect you through the wireless router already installed.

I second this...I'm doing it with a WRT54G (v8) with DDWRT. Basically a router I had collecting dust. Works perfectly.

oconomist just to clarify, as you can see there are few ways to solve the issue.

The least expensive id a Wireless PCI Card, the most expensive is Powerline adapters.

Using a Wireless Router as Wireless card is a good solution too.

This Router would do it just as Good as what mentioned above for almost half of the cost.

Which solution is the best? There is No absolute best, it depends on your specific environment.

Are there any wireless routers out there that can be turned into wireless bridges with 802.11n speeds? All I have found are 802.11g. I'd like to turn my DIR-655 into one if possible, but I haven't seen a way to do it yet.

I do not think that the DIR-655 takes DD-WRT.

Log to the DD_WRT wiki page and look at the list some of the Linksys Draft_N are flashable.

I had used an old WRT54G with Tomato a year ago, but I passed that router to my in-laws. draft N would be preferred. OR is there a decent dedicated bridge or ethernet extender that is recommended (like used with an Xbox or something)?

It is not flashable to DD-WRT. However, they sell a wireless bridge that complements it very well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-256-_-Product

I have both units and it works very well. I also have an old v2.2 WRT54G flashed with DD-WRT upstairs running in bridge mode. It works very well with the 2nd Xbox360 and the D*TV box.

Go here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

Type in Linksys and browse the list. There's a few N routers, and if you had two of them I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work in N together.

You can have multiple routers in one house...I have a D-link downstream from a Linksys (not WRT54G so no custom firmwares). What I do is to run an Ethernet cable from one of the ports on the Linksys and put that into the WAN port in the D-link, then set it to automatically detect settings. This works without having to fiddle with WDS, which isn't supported on any of the routers I have.
