I am trying to find a solid gaming LCD. From my research I guess that means at least 16ms response time though maybe 12 is better.

I want 1600x1200 resolution capability because I play every game at that resolution. I have a gaming system and it's beefy enough to handle it. There are some nice LCDs at 1280x1024 but no, I want 1600x1200.

From I've found there are these two monitors:

1)Viewsonic VP201B - $680
20.1"
250 cd/m2
16ms
1600x1200
400:1 contrast
0.255mm pixel pitch

2)DELL 2001FP - $636.65
20.1"
250 cd/m2
16ms
1600x1200
400:1
0.255mm pixel pitch

Does any gamer out there have any experience with these monitors or any other LCDs that will run 1600x1200? I don't want ghosting but I suppose a little bit isn't going to kill me. The 20" size isn't all that important so long as the LCD is capable of 1600x1200 and good for gaming (23" or whatever would be ok).

Thanks and any and all advice, tips, or comments are appreciated!!

I have had that Dell for 1.5 years and it works like a charm. You might be able to get it for even cheaper than that with Dell's sales.

Welcome to forums. See the specs on both LCDs? Identical. Why? Cause both use the same LG/Phillips panel. Same monitors, different nameplates. I wouldn't be surprised if Benq is the OEM for both.

I own the Dell 2001FP. Gaming on it is fine for me although I don't game much anymore. If you're in the US you can pick up that Dell 2001FP for lot less than $636.65 new. If you can wait for a good sale, you should have no problem picking it up in the low $400s.

Do you mean pick it up from dell in the low $400s? Right now they are listing it as $636.

Thanks

That's because sale is over. The key to buying anything Dell is to wait for the right sale. Dell puts out lot of internet coupons and specials that can be stacked and used to get discounts on select Dell merchandise. They run minor coupon and sales couple times a week and couple big sales near end of each fiscal quarter. So around 4 times a year Dell will have a really big sale. It's more than that but you can count on at least 4 times due to the pressure to meet Wall Street revenue numbers. You just missed the latest one that was last week.

DEAL OVER!!! New Dell LCD Coupons - 2005FPW - $384.40
I managed to pick up Dell 2005FPW for $370 shipped including tax.

I recommend you check Hot Deals forum often if you're looking for Dell deal or any deal for that matter. Hope that helped.

The 2005FPW is better for gaming 12MS vs the 2001's 16MS response time. I would wait for the next deal, as the come almost every other week lately.

I don't think the 2005FPW has as high a resolution? 1680 x 1050. Do games look ok in that resolution? I have a 6800 GT btw.

Yes that res does look good. That is actually a wide screen res so you should have a better field of view in your games and potentially an advantage against people with 4:3 resolutions.

1680x1050 is pretty close to 1600x1200 IMO. Just add some more AA and you won't be able to tell the difference.

Sweet! Maybe that is a better option for me then. Is there gonna be the black box stuff on the side like in a widescreen movie or will the games cover the whole screen? May be a stupid question but my laptop does funny things with its widescreen capability. WUXGA or whatever.

Don't worry. Another sale will surely come. You can definitely expect one around June/July but one will surely come before that.

2005FPW is supposed to have even faster response time at 12ms. The resolution is 1680x1050 widescreen so not all games support this resolution natively although lot of games are starting to and you can usually hack the ini file to make it work at this resolution. If not you can always run the games scaled which shouldn't be too bad. Many people seem to prefer 2005FPW for gaming over 2001FP due to it being widescreen. 2001FP is usually preferred by people who want more desktop real estate. The 2005FPW will be used by my wife. She doesn't play any games other than Solitaire.

At current prices I would definitely go for 2005FPW. $486.85 vs $636.65 makes it no brainer IMO.

You'll get black bars during movies even on widescreen because aspect ratio for movies are all different. Different movies use different aspect.

Games you'll get full screen in native res. For non-native res you can choose either to stretch it full or not.

If you don't want to wait on a sale, I'm sure there are people who bought the 2005fpw during the last sale at 354$ will be selling them on ebay/forums here for a few bucks profit.

I think the current 35% off sale is the best they will have for quite some time. $486 isn't bad at all considering the MSRP of $749. I also checked the gottadeal.com place and all the previous sales on the monitor and the highest it has ever been was 40% off (which combined with some other crap got it down to $350). I doubt they will be repeating that anytime soon. Anyway I just ordered one but if it has any dead pixels or bleeding I'm getting a refund.

Doubtful, I think you have to get more than 7 stuck off, 7 stuck on, or 7 total dead pixels to be elegible for replacement under their policy.

I have the 2001 and it's just fine for gaming. I agree with the others - definitely wait for a sale. I know it was just in the high $300's and it seems to go on sale every other week for at least $450. A few days patience will definitely pay for itself.

Thats not really true. All you have to do is tell them that you are unhappy with it and they will refund.

Refund sure, but what if you really liked it and got a great price?

I hate seeing 20" monitors going for 350ish now, I paid 450 for my dell 1800 just a couple years ago and even then I got it off hot deals, I think they were going for around 800 then.

you don't even have to be "unhappy" Dell has a no questions asked poolicy for the first 21 days. It might even be 30 days not sure.

I game regularly, and I bought two of the 2001s about 6 months back. Very happy with them. For the price they go these days, they're absolutely killer.

I received my 2005FPW today. Connected it to my wife's computer and quickly checked for dead pixels. One dead pixel on the left side of the screen but it's non-issue as I can't see it. Turn the brightness down to zero as the default torched my eyes. I'll check for backlight bleeding later on with DVD movie but so far the LCD looks good. Definitely a bargain at $370.

I prefer my 2001FP over 2005FPW but that may change later as I spend more time with it.

I had the 2001FP and I returned it. I did not like how it looked with games. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice monitor for text and it's sharp as a razor at 1600x1200 but the "LCD lag" bothered me in games. One spot I really noticed it was the moving water in Half-Life2. In the end I couldn't see $600 difference between the 2001FP and my Compaq P1220 (19.8" viewable Diamondtron CRT).
