For comparison's sake, I'd look at a year old Pontiac GTO for about the same $$.

GTO has a better interior and more comfortable seats. Smaller trunk though and the looks are a bit polar to people.

For the money though, the Mustang GT is a great value. The V6 performs well, but it's kind of a disgrace to the Mustang name Go with the V8.

I would buy the v6 just because I love them so much and can't afford a GT. I don't know why ppl always say "Get the GT"? Sure its much much more fun but a v6 also has enough power to get you in trouble and get you some excitement in budget.

I've rented a 2005 GT and I wasn't that impressed. Biggest turnoff was the cramped interior, cheesy guages and the high hood, that when riding in the vehicle looking out the front, you feel like you are riding in a full size Dodge RAM Truck. I liked the power though, but I wouldn't buy one.

There is a nice amount aftermarket stuff available for the V6 too. (Superchargers, intakes, etc.)

I love the seats. They are much more comfortable than any of the seats of cars I test drove, including the 350Z, G35 coupe, G6, etc.

They don't...but starting in '06 they have a 'Pony Package' that gives V6's the GT's Bullit wheels and a fog-light package...maybe that's what the OP meant?

I wouldn't buy one so I guess that means I don't like 'em. If I had to have a late model Mustang it'd have to be a '03 Cobra-R

I like the GTO's interior - are the GTO backseats actually usable by people that are not midgets? The backseat in my 'stang seems to be for decoration only...I'm contemplating getting a rear seat delete kit to lighten the car.

I noticed at the last car show that the rear seats in the Mustang are unuseable if the driver has the seat back all the way. The only other thing that stuck out where the front speaker grills that looked out of place. Otherwise, if I didn't already own a GTO, I could see seriously considering a Mustang GT. Also, the live axle does a lot better on the roads than people think and has a huge advantage over the IRS at the track.

Thanks for the advice people. He's pretty set on a new mustang. I'll look into the newer GTOs though, even though they don't look very cool (i bet pontiac really could of sold a lot more of they designed it better) they have some power under the hood. Are they anything at all like the GTOs of the 60s? My Dad talks a lot about his old GTO a lot, so he might be willing to look into the newer ones.

I dont like them. I don't like large cars in general.

Id much rather have a smaller, lighter, more efficient, better handling small car than a giant american hog that can rise above the rest only in straight line acceleration, which is a cheap thrill that gets old quick.

Its the kind of car that I'd love to rent for a week and joyride in it, and then never have to deal with it again when I'm tired of burning out at every stoplight.

I really liked their look when they first hit the streets... now I see them everywhere and they're starting too look more common thatn I originally thought. Still, they're way nicer looking than the previous mustang.

I was considering buying one when the '05s first came out. I currently have an '03 GT and a '88 GT. Then I decided to wait for the Shelby

Last year I rented a V6 Mustang, and absolutely hated it. The interior felt both cheap and cheesy, and the funky hoodline made it so that you couldn't tell where the curb was if you were making a right turn. By contrast, the fit and finish of my '05 GTO is far superior, and personally I like the GTO body style. Plus it sounds great

So what. I suspect a better car than the Mustang can be found in its own price range.

big purchases, like cars, especially new, should be done and done right. dont buy something you will regret. spend the money and cut elsewhere. at least then, when you get in your car, you can let your soul out without dispair.

I almost went to the dark side and bought a Mustang last year. With the death of the F-Body I was almost ready to jump from GM to Ford. I knew in my heart that it would be back and the Detroit auto show erased any idea of me getting a Mustang. Even the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach now. Blech!

Anyone have the latest Motor Trend issue? Supposedly there is an article that GM is axing the GTO since the new Camaro is coming out.

It's overweight and the gunnels are too high. I dont think window sills belong at chin level, especially since I prefer them to the "arm rests" for where I let my elbow sit...

Live axle also sucks as the car will be prone to hopping around when you're really flogging it around corners.

the '05 interior is way better than the 99-04 but I'd be surprised if they didn't creak and rattle just as much as any other mustang in 4 or 5 years.

<<< Mustang owner.

I'm glad I had mine, but I'll never buy another. My next sports car will amost certainly be an RX8 or Miata GT
