it looked like a fair call for a penalty shot to me, i can't complain based on the video. Another deserved victory for chicago unfortunately.

my biggest gripe about going back to chicago is having to listen to their singer for the national anthem again. Dear lord is he terrible.

them's fightin words!

Am I the only one who saw how offsides that play that scored was?
Nope. Detroit player (Franzen?) brought the puck back into the zone.

Now the penalty shot call; iffy to me. Two minute minor for slashing if I'm wearing stripes.

San Jose did their part now it's up to Chicago to do theirs. Get this series to 7, 'Hawks!
Well done, Chicago.

I don't have a dog in either semi-final fight but it would be tres cool if all four of the past Cup champs made the conference finals.

Ya I saw them point out Franzen in a later replay. It didn't make my night much better.

It was a legit call, a very very weak call, but legit.

With the whole "let them play" attitude you see through the playoffs, when a weak call comes in you're like, what? THAT is a penalty?

I'm going to agree with the haters (for once) and say Eddie O needs to recuse himself from national Hawks games. You could really tell he was a fan last night.

I think he's a great announcer, and when the hawks aren't playing his analysis is spot on. He also has a great report with doc, and an under-appreciated, dry sense of humor. He deserves his spot on the top national announcing team

But there were times last night he seemed to be struggling for breath. He didn't even get out a "for all you young hockey players out there..."

I listened to the CBC announcers last night. Leaps and bounds better than the NBC Sports guys.

Pierre Mcquire ruins NBC. His little comments destroy the broadcast.
Along with Eddy O and Mike "WITH THE DRIVE" Emrick, they all suck really.

Thank goodness I can watch the CBC feed. Would love to see Jim, Grapes, Ron, Scott, and PJ on USA TV. Even Bob and Darren from TSN.

I don't know whether the ref was calling it a hook or a slash, but it fits the definition of a slash pretty well:

The only question is whether it was forceful enough to call it a slash. It wasn't a gentle tap, and it did prevent the shot on goal. They let a lot of slashing go, and I'm glad they do. But if you do it to prevent a shot on a breakaway I think they should call it every time.

Was a beauty of a shot too.

I'm rooting for Chicago here, but my level of caring is about 1 out of 10.

I listened to the broadcast while I doing a brake job. I'm glad I wasn't watching at the time because I would have been screaming at the TV. That was a bad call.

No, it wasn't.

Slashing (Rule 61)
The group felt that slashes to the hand area were increasingly being used as a tactic by defenders to disrupt offensive players. The consensus was that officials no longer had to be certain that contact had been made with the hands (as opposed to the stick) in deciding whether or not to assess a slashing minor.
The most discussed slashing plays were:
1) Example 1 Nystrom on Havlat. This is an example of a light slash in the hand area that should be called moving forward.
2) Example 2 Stamkos on Malkin. This was discussed as an example of slashing for the sole purpose of disrupting an offensive player. The defensive player made no attempt to play the puck in this instance. Accordingly, a penalty should be called.
3) Example 3 Greening on Stamkos. It was determined that this was an illegal play. The defensive player used slashes to the hand area to disrupt the attacking player, making no attempt to play the puck.
4) Example 4 Park on Tavares. This was cited as an example of a play that should be penalized even though there had not been contact with the hands. The offensive player's stick was broken on this play, but the consensus was that this should be a penalty either way.

With the Sharks out, I am in the position of not caring about any of the remaining 4 teams.

I will pick one from the East and West because I love playoff hockey, but it will not be cheering from the heart.

LA Defense and Quick were impressive.

If they play like that again in the WCF I honestly don't think Det/Chi could beat them.

But then again, they didn't win one on the road game, so...

That was a very entertaining game. I hope Jumbo Joe enjoyed watching it as much as I did.

The Conn Smythe wants to stay at Quick's house...

I turned off NBC sports during the second period the other day (when the Wings took the lead, actually). I won't even be giving them a chance tonight.

Bring it home, Jimmy...

yeah, they need detroit to win tonight and its a virtual guarantee they will advance to the SCF. No losses at home this year in the playoffs, no losses at home last year when they went the whole way.

I've always been a Pitts / Flyers fan for the other conference (I loved watching them match up, it's a shame this year!), so if Wings are out, that'll be my vote.

But until then, go Wings!

Yeah not a huge fan of Emrick either, completely disagree with the Eddy O judgement though. He can break down the game quickly and explain it to the audience very well.

But, I'd be willing to bet that broadcast team of Eddy O and Emrick would be alot better without Pierre "The Penis" Mcquire ruining every moment in the game.

Eddy O is such a huge homer when it comes Hawks though.

Too bad Gary Thorne likes the money ESPN gives him.

It won't be the same when that ratfaced asshole is being a dick on behalf of some other team in his press conferences.

I just hope they Rangers continue to fail under whatever coach they bring in.

He was the only reason to watch the rangers. I hope he gets picked up somewhere else.
