This doesn't surprise me. Never was in the navy but it sounded rather unimpressive. My maternal grandfather had been in the navy for 8 years and was I think a "Master Chief" which is I guess an E8, before getting a wartime commission after Pearl Harbor.

One black guy was speaking at the rally, not sure who but he ran his own podcast and was bragging of the massive followers he had. THEN, he started bashing and conspiracizing the covid vaccine telling people "not to get it" and "they don't need it". THEN.... he went on telling some story of a friend that had covid and used some magical elixir that saved his life and made him all well again. AND.... it just so happens that this miracle elixir was sold on this guys podcast website. OH HOW CONVENIENT.

Then, we had the MY PILLOW GUY speaking at several locations at the rally, and then it hit me..... THIS was not a rally for Trump or in support of Trump, no.... THIS WAS their opportunity TO SELL THEIR SHIT to people. It was like some TV info commercial only with Donald Trump banners added in. And I thought... THIS IS SOOOO DONALD TRUMP. To push and sell their crap to the public taking advantage of an opportunity to make a buck. Selling their elixirs and crappy pillows to Trump supporters. OMG... is THIS what we have come to? Where one can't even attend a racist bigoted Donald Trump rally without being hit up to buy shit? Pillows, magic elixirs, and god knows what else? If Donald Trump was at the rally, you can bet he was at some booth pushing his Trump water, Trump steaks and Trump MEGA hats. So pathetic....

The problem is that whatever emerges from the aftermath comes for the rest of us. This is our authoritarian future and I don't know if we can stop it.

Of course we can stop it. We've done so for 230 years. Trump's ouster creates a power vacuum in the GOP their radicals will try to exploit. The catch, of course, is that there is only one Trump. Nobody does mindfuck nearly as well. Maybe he'll form a govt in exile when the flees the country.

my worry is that they will try to find or groom the next trump (TM). someone who is just as amoral but actually competent.

if trump croaks between now and 2024 we might have battle between him and jr. for the maga crowd. despite having lived through one recently, i don't think americans have that much of an appetite for dynasties. further, jr. is much more visibly a useless heir than his father is, while pillow guy is self made and has overcome his additions.

If Lindell will that meant that wearing sheets and pillow cases will come back into Vogue?

You don't need bullets flying for it to be a coup. If Trump had succeeded in convincing legislatures to throw out Biden electors and install Trump ones, that would have been a coup . Using political power to overturn the will of the people and corruptly stay in office.

Just because he failed so far, doesn't mean that he hasn't been attempting a coup.

Stephen Miller now saying"alternative electors" in the swing states are going to cast their EC votes for Trump and those are the ones going to Congress.

Sounds crazy, I know, but I'm telling you...their endgame is some crazy tactic on Jan 6th. This is the start of it.

Meh, that’s just pathetic flailing.

There are some things Trump has done to try and conduct a coup that were more dangerous than others. Simply declaring that you have your own new electors is not going to get him anywhere. 1/10 on the threat to democracy meter.

Don't discount it so quickly. That is exactly what happened in 1877 when several states turned in two sets of EC votes, each claiming to be the official one, giving the Senate the excuse it needed to form a committee to hand pick which EC votes they wanted to accept and which they wanted to throw out. It very nearly stated a second civil war, only years after the first. In the end the Compromise of 1877 was struck and basically Rutherford B. Hayes became President not because he won the election, but because of closed door horse trading in the Senate.

I am hereby discounting it quickly. In 1877 the results of those states were disputed, in 2020 all of them have officially certified their results in accordance with their own state laws. They have already chosen their electors, and the electoral college is voting today. Federal law requires Congress to accept the electors chosen this way unless both houses of Congress agree not to, which they will not.

1/10.

Surely the key point there is that to replicate that would require the participation of the state legislatures. They need to agree to send a rival slate of electors. For Congress to dispute the election effectively those state legislatures have to do their bit, and so far they have not. Seems like that's really the main thing that makes it hard to see a 'legal coup' succeeding. Without that happening I can't see what the Republicans in the Capital can do...though I admit I'm very interested to see what they come up with. Hopefully it will be something farcical.
