I have told her that there are many different religions with many different gods i.e. Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, etc. I'll ask her why she says some of the things she says and she says because it is the bible. I told her that some people believe everything in the bible and other people think it tells us stories that teach us how to be nice to each other.

How do you handle a situation like this? How do I prevent brainwashing and keep her mind open?

Tell her religion is a interpretation of direct experience, the founders of all religions saw the same God but interpreted differently.

That still a lie. Tell her no one knows what created the world, and it is our job to find out. Not with bullshit religious lies, but concrete evidence.

But it's not. He didn't directly experience it, and he certainly can't say for sure that anyone else has. If anyone experienced anything they also can't say for sure that it was the same thing. I guess he could say that someone on the internet told him that religion is an interpretation of direct experience, and that he doesn't know how they could possibly come to that conclusion with any degree of real certainty.

Stig just don't lie to her. Don't pressure her. Don't make her feel like she's being cross-examined when she's with you. Be tolerant and distinctly religion neutral around her. There is nothing worse than indoctrination no matter which side it comes from.

Prove that it is not real. Religious people and atheists both believe their ideas blindly. Why are you so miserably dependent on others for proof? If you want proof, research yourself- do not believe until you find the truth.

The comment I made was extremely unbiased, it gives a child an open mind to think what's real and whats not.

While I was out with my son last week I overheard this 5 year old yelling at his mother ?God doesn?t exist, god didn?t make me, I came from mommy and daddy not god? and on and on. I was cracking up the mom was trying to get him to quite down, and he just kept going full blast, I couldn?t figure out what set him off and all the parents were all just in silence listening and staring.

Encourage her to question things. When you're finally able bring her back here with you, make sure she's exposed to places that will bring on questions (I can think of three museums around here that would be great for this). The more questions she asks, the more people she asks, the more she'll start to realize that there's more than just the black and white defined by the fundamentalist Christian view. But realize that if you do come off as attacking or belittling Christianity (i.e. her beliefs), she will be less likely to come to you for answers, and will probably lose a certain respect towards you. Make sure she feels comfortable talking to you about -anything-.

I've seen some kids that get Christianity pushed on them very hard, and rebel, but I've also seen those that eat it up and become totally ignorant to reality. Either way, a daughter will do what her parents do, so if you question Christianity, so will she.

Yes, but religious people are wrong. I think we can at least make some assumption based on scientific fact and reason.

You do understand, don't you, that it is YOU claiming to know that some UNSEEN UNDETECTABLE all-powerful "God' governs are universe? And, that the burden of proof is on you!

See, If i say there is an invisible pink unicorn in the corner of my room, does that mean YOU have to disprove it? NO, It's my responsibility to prove something that I'm claiming to exist. The same applies to god, so, atheists don't have to prove anything, we simply believe in what we CAN prove. We don't have to prove something you claim to exist is not real, because your the one making the claim.

So, go ahead and prove god exists, but wait, the bible basically defines god as unprovable, so your going on some book riddled with inaccuracies to base your entire way of life on.

One word,

FAIL

Videogames101 - I saw this in Anubis' sig, and I like it; as best as I remember it:

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorn is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that she is pink; we logically know that she is invisible because we can't see her.

THAT doesn't make sense, but the invisible creator of everything that lives in the sky is perfectly reasonable.

So, go ahead and prove god exists, but wait, the bible basically defines god as unprovable, so your going on some book riddled with inaccuracies to base your entire way of life on.
That really is a convenient clause.
He exists, but you can't prove that he does, and trying to do so is blasphemy, for he thrives on faith.

There is no man behind the curtain! In fact, don't even try to look behind the curtain, or I'll kill you!
No man behind the curtain.

OP - it is a shame that some of the first things the fundamentalists like to do is teach the kids who they should hate.
"God is eternal, infinite love. But here's who he thinks you should hate: ......."

Yes, I enjoyed reading that one as well.

My response was based on that, but I couldn't remember the wording.

Google, dammit!

A search for "invisible pink unicorn" turned it up quickly.

You gave up any possibility when you hooked up with her mother.

A 4 year old? It sucks that she's getting brainwashed, but there's not much you can reasonably do right now. I think you should give it time and not worry so much right now.

When she got older, I kept up by saying that there were other religions and giving her a brief explanation. Without me feeding her the specific words, by age ten or eleven she came to the conclusion herself that the religions that say they're the only way can't all be right.

OP, you could tell her the cross is also an idol.

denominations are not different religions. There are minor differences between them, but nothing which would invalidate one against another. They all believe the same thing.

These are idiotic things to say.

For example, why don't you "prove" that the Flying Spaghetti Monster isn't real, or prove that Zeus isn't really there up on Mount Olympus, ready to throw thunderbolts at people?

Religious people really do believe their ideas blindly, given that there is no evidence whatsoever that "God" exists, let along any evidence of God's nature (or even that God is singular, and not plural).

Atheists, on the other hand, often use the scientific method to come to conclusions about the nature of reality. You remember that from Bible school? Oh, wait, they don't study science there...

From Wikipedia entry on the Scientific Method:

Scientific researchers propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental studies to test these hypotheses. These steps must be repeatable in order to dependably predict any future results. Theories that encompass wider domains of inquiry may bind many hypotheses together in a coherent structure. This in turn may help form new hypotheses or place groups of hypotheses into context.

It's much easier to just not think for yourself and pull "truth" from the Bible, isn't it? Comforting, too...

tell her religion is just a path to God. there are many different ways to get there. eg, she goes to school, the road she takes to get there is the correct one for her. but the other children argue at school, that there path they take is the right one, and the others are wrong. one comes from the east, one from west etc.

all paths lead to God

something like that works for me
