the computer has only been on maybe an hour under heavy use and already 50c!!
is this normal for a 2200+?or fo i need a new cpu cooler.? i have 2 fans in my case
one on the side blowing air in and a top blowhole..plenty of airflow..
anyhelp is appreciated

50 degrees is kind of warm(if thats at idle), What kind of heatsink are you currently running? If its the stock AMD heatsink I would suggest going to aThermalright SLK 800 with a panaflo L1A fan to keep the noise down. If your mobo has the 4 holes drilled around the socket you might want to think about getting the Swiftech heatsink so you don't have to use those clips on the socket itself. Read the reviews on the two and you'll probably like what you see about both.

I have an Xp1900+ with an Alpha PAL 8045 w/ the panaflo L1A fan and i'm getting about mid 30's during warm weather and low to mid 40's during hot days.

The high end XPs put out qutie a bit of heat. Its perfectly normal.

With the retail heatsink 50° idle temps are normal. And 55° under load can be expected.

Don't worry about it. Your processor is far from frying. AMD offically states no damage will occur until the processor reaches 90°, and you are far from that! You'll have massive stability problems long before your processor reaches it's max temp!

52C is nothing to worry about for XP chips.
When you see mid 60C then you want to get better coolings.

Although it may not be close to frying the cpu, can an idle temperature in the 55-65 range ( and an assumed higher temperature when actually being used) cause instability issues? I recently got a 2700+ and after only a few hours of gaming, the computer locks up. This coincides with the case temperature exceeding 27 degrees Celsius. At what point does the heat start affecting stability?

Not really, my old T-bird 1.3 runs around 55C during light load. After 2 hrs of counterstrike, I was woren out before cpu overheated. I imagine the chip must be in 60C range during game play.

I think the general concensus is that it varies per chip and setup, et cetera, based upon your experiences- though if you're hitting, say, 75 or 80 degrees, that may well be your problem.
That aside, I will say that with having CPU temps 40+ degrees hotter than your case, you may want to re-examine your cpu hsf setup.
Let's start by what processor and motherboard you have, as well as ram and video, and if anything is overclocked. Also, we should see what power supply you're running with your setup.
Also include information on case ventilation and cpu hsf, and anything else drawing power in your setup.
