Hi, all.

I am slowly getting ready to build a new PC, but first I am looking to replace my current monitor.

It will be used mainly for gaming, general computer functions and the occassional Blu-Ray viewing.

I am looking for a glossy-screened display. I am not too fond of matte these days. I see a silk-screen effect on every matte-screened monitor I've looked at, and it's distracting.

Beyond that, my priorities are:

1) Good black levels and shadow detail.

2) Color accuracy.

3) Decent anti-glare ability.

4) Good response time for gaming.

5) Natural sharpness.

I do NOT care about:

1) Viewing angles. This will be viewed from a desk-chair only, so off-angle performance isn't a concern.

2) Built-in speakers or other such "accessories".

3) Thinness. As long is it's a flat-panel, it's thin enough.

I've set my budget at $150-$250. If something truly amazing can be had for a bit more, I am willing to stretch somewhat if I need to.

Thanks in advance!

Please state what your current monitor is, and whether you are looking to just improve or stay equal with regard to each attribute.

Trying to get both 1 & 4 will probably warrant some rare pva which far fewer people are familiar with.

I have a Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW currently.

I'm primarily looking for improved blacks and shadow detail, no "silk-screen" effect to the screen, larger viewing area and 1080p natively.

Thanks.

Glossy screens seem very hard to come by these days, but I've been eyeing the HP 2511x, which seems to hit a lot of my wish list, and is well within my budget.

Is there any reason that I shouldn't go for this?

Thanks.

Since I'm all of a sudden in the market for a new monitor, I've looked at the HP models as well. One of my biggest concerns is the 1 year warranty. Most of the others offer a 3 year warranty. IIRC, SOME of the HP monitors come with 3 years...but not that particular one. Some folks don't care about the length of warranty. I do.

i was looking at the HP ZR24W b/c they had some great sale prices on them not too long ago. but i was turned off by the 1 year warranty as well. don't quote me, but i think the short warranty period is due to the fact that HP is looking to get out of the LCD monitor market...then again, maybe they're just looking to move away from selling mid-range to high-end IPS panel LCD's...

Glad you found something. That looks to be a great deal for the price. Hope it works out for you!

I've been messing around with this for a few days, and I'm very pleased overall.

Versus my Ultrasharp, the 2511x needs a fair amount of adjustments in order to display an acceptable picture. The Dell was much better sorted out at default settings.

After adjustments, black levels and shadow details, while not super amazing, are definitely improved over the Dell, and the picture is punchier with more depth as a result.

It's not *quite* as sharp from my viewing distance, but that was to be expected given the large leap in screen size.

My only real complaint is that even from straight-on, the viewing angles create uniformity issues. Depending on your seating position, either the top or bottom of the screen can shift in color some. This isn't noticeable is most cases.

All-in-all, the monitor is definitely a worthy buy for the price.
