there is still no concrete source on whether there will even be a 8900 series, but who knows, maybe nvidia is just holding back till amd/ati release their r600. it's anybody's guess.

if you need it now then go for the GTX, if you can wait a month more since thats when r600 is to be released sometime in april, then wait. your X1900XT512 can't be holding you back that much in games, can it? not unless your playing like oblivion or something of that caliber.

It's highly unlikely an Opteron @2.80GHz will bottleneck a 8800 GTS @1920x1200. And when it does, the FPS will be higher than that of GPU-bound scenarios. For example,

GPU-bound situation: Opteron @2.80GHz will net you the same FPS that C2D @3.60GHz gives
CPU-bound situation: Opteron @2.80GHz will give you 80 FPS where C2D gives 100 FPS (You gotta be very very sensitive to discern 80 FPS from 100 FPS )

There is a reason why NV recommends 25x16 to reviewers for G80 reviews.

:thumbsup: Nor will it bottleneck even a GTX at that resolution. Granted, this only shows 2 games, but if a C2D at 1.8ghz gets the same performance with a GTX as a C2D at 3ghz, there is no bottleneck. I'm sure the Opty at 2.8ghz fits in the middle there somewhere.

Not sure if I vote for the GTS or GTX for you, Matt. I'm a big believer in buying the absolute best video card you can, but at the same time, I definitely agree with sticking to budgets and just "buying what you need". If all you need right now is GTS speed, then get that and enjoy it until a game comes out that forces you to look for an upgrade in order to get the performance you want (which will likely happen in the next 6-9 months).
