seems like this thread is missing a little important factor. a few post up the guy who said he went to 1gb and could do like 5 things at once with more ram. this is true so what *regular* users ( i know most of us are prob not ) need to think about (after 256mb's) is how much multitasking are they gonna really be doing. I mean how often do you burn, encode mp3's and play a game at the same time? seriously most people don't ( I admit it is cool though) but to justify an $$ for the few times you want to impress your friends is what you may want to consider before spending the $$, I also read somewhere(tom's hardware?) that 256 was the "sweet spot" for win 2k, this being a generalization of "normal" set up and usage. I personally run 256 pc2100's in a couple boxes both win2k pro and XP pro. It runs fine but wiht prices getting low I can see the jump to 512 being worth it cause I do push my machines a bit

Had to hand my friends PC800 RDRAM back and I am now running XP Pro with 128MB! That's what was originally included with my retail boxed P4 CPU...

I've recently upgrade to 1 GB from 512 MB and I've noticed slightly faster level load times in games and much faster level reload times, especially when travelling across multiple levels. Unreal 2 especially seems to like the extra RAM.

I'm runnin' 256 mb on xp now...seems ok.

A lot of people are just stupid about memory.

After a certain point it really doesn't make any difference...that's a fact.

Nobody in here is going to notice the diff between 1 Gb and 2 Gb, as was previously mentioned.

Anybody got any benchies between 256 and 512 on xp?

I know games ARE NOT going to run any faster. They may load faster, but that's it.

I may make the jump to 512 here...since memory is so cheap...

u know how on each windows os u can feel the difference between certain amounts of ram with normal usage? u can feel the difference between 256 and 512. load up a few things, file sharing etc, and your 256 is shot. then again, maybe u don't multitask much. 256 is below sweet spot for average user on xp.

Well I have 512 in mine and if you run a few games, keep some browser windows open, burn a cd or two, and leave emule running it feels like im on my old K6-2 350 with 32megs of ram again...wonder if upgrading a bit would be worth it.

heh.

ack, never believe those over-optimistic (and misleading) ' minimum ' requirements on the box. I predict it would take 512-768 mb for good minimum and preferrably 1 gig or more to be comfortable
