after reading some reviews like this I'm gathering that the new card from ATI/AMD does not beat the 8800 GTX Article

well as a graduation present I get to make my ultimate gaming PC and I am not sure what to do. I was keeping up to date with video cards since the R600 was announced then I started to lose interest but now I'm now aware of what is going on with future video cards. has ATI or NVIDIA announced a new card? will better drivers help the 2900 xtx overtake the 8800? whatever happens I'll probably be able to crossfire/sli whatever card I get so please just tell me whats going on with video cards today or if you're tired of people like myself, link to a thread that I should be looking at. thanks

I'd go with 8800GTX SLI if you want the "ultimate gaming PC".

No offense, but you're a bit late to the HD 2900 XT parade.

There are a ton of posts on it if you do a search, but all from a couple weeks ago mostly.

I would never recommend SLI or CF unless you like burning money either.

Right now best option for high end is the 8800 GTX, or possibly the HD 2900 XT if you game at very high resolutions, & don't mind a bit of a gamble.
Best value high end would be the 8800 GTS 640 MB.

I'm not sure why people say go SLI. Sure GTX beats 2900xt, but it seems 2900xt scales very well in crossfire (performance almost doubles) in most reviews and better than 640gts sli (bit slower than sli GTX tho). Of course you will need monster of a power supply, but you would also for SLI.

I'd play it safe and wait till 2012 before buying anything. BOUND to be something faster then.

Slightly more helpful:

NVIDIA SAYS its G92 high-end graphics card will deliver almost a teraflop of computing performance.
In an analyst webcast, Nvidian Michael Hara says that the chip will be ready for Christmas, a release cycle the company adopted with G80, where high-end products come out for Chrimbo and the mid-range and low-end products hit in the spring.

the 2900xt"x" is already available in Canada for $650 ... it features a faster core and 1GB DDR4 vRAM ... kinda lika a "special edition" ... i expect to see similar or better performance from the 65 nm XTX

I concur that SLI/CF is just idiotic in most cases, but if you can include
a Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC in your ultimate gaming PC, then heck yes
SLI/CF.

Do you have no spending limit at all on this, or is it just an absurdly high spending limit?

I asked because I won't be able to buy anything for about 5 months so it wouldn't make sense for me to buy something like the 8800 if there is a brand new top of the line card coming out tomorrow.

also, I don't really have a spending limit on this computer. it is a graduation gift and my mom won some 10 million dollar judgment on contingency so kinda as a celebration she is rewarding the whole family.

thanks for the help

haha, I wish I could score $10 million.

Well, if there's absolutely no limit why not get yourself the 30" Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC
and run it off of 2x 8800 Ultras.

Yes, I know the performance you get barely beats a much cheaper OC'ed GTX,
but with no spending limit, why not?

Not to offend you but if you actually want an accurate and informed answer, come back in 5 months and we'll be able to answer your question.

With newegg can't you do some preferred member thing where you don't have to pay anything for 6 months?

Because if that's the case, why not buy it now and pay it later (I'm assuming the 5 month wait is for the $$ to come in)

why is the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP-HC so great? I heard good things about it mostly from PC World but I don't understand how it stands out other than being big. right now I'm using the ViewSonic VP191B Black 19" which isn't as amazing as I hoped it would be but with an 8ms refresh time, isn't it faster than the 12 ms of the Dell?

i'd at least wait for the geforce 8900 cards. beyond that, wait for good dx10 games (probably best idea) so you know the card will run it well, or perhaps like wait for the g92 like what that guy said (assuming what he said is true). basically yeah you can expect new stuff to come out within the next 5 months, at the very least on the processor end. plus current stuff will be way cheaper.

You can always wait for the next best thing, there will ALWAYS be something better around the corner. Go ahead and get the best you can now at a reasonable price when you are darn good and ready to get it.

lol I understand that there is always going to be something "coming out" but since I won't buy anything for a few months it is reasonable for me to ask about speculation.
