2U PSU's ?

I'm researching 2U (100mm x 70mm x Xmm) PSU's for some upcoming projects. Reliable power is highest priority, general reliability next, noise unfortunately must be in 3rd. These are for some video processing PC's for my son's highschool.

Some I'm looking at are: Athena, EMACS, I-Star, Sparkle, Enhance (Chenbro?), or Etasis.

I've never encountered any of these except Athena. Any recommendations pro or con on these companies or others would be greatly appreciated. There was one post on here with one person recommending emacs. If there have been any other discussions on these that I couldn't find I'd really appreciate a pointer.

Thanks,

Welcome to our forums AslansHow.

Your very first post and no one steps up to the plate after 14 views. Shows how much we know.

If the case is marked ATX form factor it will accept an ATX PSU, even if it is a server type case(or so i'm told).

I just came from the bench and will be using a HP-2 6460P. It is a tank of a PSU.
The HP-2 series has a fan about as loud as the old Fortron, 80mm @ .22A, they are thermally controled but not by much. The HG-2 series are a little quieter. The PSL series go up to 700watt. Zippy/Emacs are amoung the most stable and reliable. Fact.
Have you considered how much power the comp really needs? Most of the 2U's are light on 12V and heavy on the 5V line. The HP2-6460P i'm using is 32A on the 12V and 40A on the 5V. It is set-up like that inorder to handle many HDDs. HDDs rely on the 5V rail nearly four times as much amperage wise as the 12V rail.

If you wish to buy new in any of these series of PSUs, check prices here LINK. You might have better luck posting over at General Hardware Forum. If you decide to do that, delete this thread.
You can edit it blank or just change the title to delete.

Use our search function. Search all forums for 2U PSU, not the current listings but go back past 90days, there is a option for that.

About two months ago there was a guy selling two 2U type Zippys on ebay. Yesterday there were none to bid on just the over priced buy it now.

Sorry i could not be of more help. Do the search of our forums, much will come up.

Not only harsh but incredably rude and uncalled for. In spite of the Avatar very uncool.

Every village has it's idiots and at times i assume that role. Yesterday it was your turn.

Old saying albumleaf,"Don't sh!t were you eat; it will smell bad."OR."Don't piss to close to the house." You managed to do both.

You picked up on my comment about 14 views and no responce and ran with it. Leave me out of your insults.
This is my last comment about this and will not get into a running gun fight or respond to any other post you make in this thread.

okay so we are idiots....
What does that idicate of your intellectual abilities if you have to ask idiots for answers?

Also since you posted here what does that say about the "more hardcore overclocking forums"?

One of 2 things come to mind.....
Iether they also couldn`t answer you or....

They are ignoring you because you act the same way there.......

What exactly are you trying to power? 2U power supplies are usually highly audible compared to basic ATX. All the PSU companies listed are pretty reliable and can be found on auction site for very small price. Sometimes $25 to $30 new.

Each system will be Asus P4P800-SE MOBO (Pentium 4 / 2.0Ghz, 1Gb RAM, Radeon 7600, Audiophile 2496 (or Audigy 2ZS), TX2200 SATA controller), 3 Seagate 250GB SATA 7200 drives, 1 CD/DVD burner, 1 CPU Fan (stock), 2 90mm case fans running @ 70%.

The case is designed to accept only 100mm x 70mm x Xmm standard 2U PSU's so ATX won't work. All else being equal, quiet is a concern.

Galvanized, thanks for the welcome. I was actually a regular on here for some time, but couldn't remember my PW and the email account I'd used is no longer.

There is a 2U Zippy 435watt on ebay right now for $45. It's a working pulled unit.

He may have more than one.

I don't know how busy the kids fingers are, but if i had to use a PSU w/60mm screamer fan,
a fan adapter 60 to 80mm would be mounted on the outside of the PSU. Just remove the 60 and wire up an 80.

Contact the mods to reactivate your old account. I had to reregister after moving and being AWOL for 16months. Now i have two accounts. I told them to kill the one i used to reregister
twice and it still comes up. Never use it and don't intend to. Go figure.

Thanks. I wish I could go with larger fans, but I've got 72.5mm from the bottom of the case to the bottom of 2 HDD's stacked directly above the PSU. I'm thinking that going with a higher watt PSU than necessary and then slowing the fans down with resistors might help. Currently leaning towards EMACs based on other comments.

Any thoughts on using a higher watt PSU, and/or slowing the fans down, and/or which PSU's have high reliability and are somewhat quiet will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sure would be nice if you would post pics or links to a case type your stuck with using.
It might be cheaper and easyer to just go to ATX cases. Decent ones can be had at around $50.

Must be the old mechanic in me but i love re-engineering anything for a work around.
The cost of more watts than you need would be a bit much and they would come with intense
fans as well. That 435watt on ebay is way more than enough for the system you posted.
If you could not use a regular ATX and have to go with a U2. Consider what my brain storm below came up with.

HDDs are easyer to move or relocate than the PSU. With that in mind, could you?

1-Down-rate the 60mm at the rear and install a 70x38 at the front intake. What the fan does not cover of the intake, seal off.
2-Down rate the 60mm, seal off the intake ports at the front, cut a hole and mount a 92x25 on top at the very front of the PSU.
With either of these mods i would use both fans for redundancy/safety.

I am quite intrested in your outcome/solution as i might buy a U2 for my next build as used they are quite inexpensive and Zippy/emacs are near the best of U2s, or so i've read.

Just recently i cleaned out an old Fortron 400watt PSU for a family members build. I down rated the stock 80mm fan(.22A) as it was the loadest thing going in the PC. Another 80mm was added inside the case about 1" from the PSU intake as an assist fan. The case did not have a blow hole in the top panel. Seems to have worked out very well.

Yeah, I'd consider using a 60-80mm fan adapter and mounting it to the outside of the PSU case myself. I've been thinking "outside the box" for quieter cooling solutions for some time now.

Once again Zepper is right on the money. I was considering mufflers for the PSU and exhaust fans on this build i'm doing. Even went as far as building two boxes and have about 16 hours in them. They are almost done but it was too cumbersome. They will go in,*it seemed like a good idea at the time box*, to be put at the curb on this coming Tuesday.

I shopped for adapters. The ones you need are at Jab-Tech.com, black anodized aluminum,
60 to 80mm, $12.95, no tax, reasonable shipping. Cheapest i found in metal. Plastic is fragile and would not consider it for external use. Use a BB fan of at least the same cfm as what you take out. The adapter i found for myself, 80 to 92mm is $20 at frozencpu. I will use a 92x38mm fan. You might consider a 80x38mm also because at the same cfm as a 80x25mm it will move the air with less turbulance. It will be quieter.
