Itll be awhile before we get real numbers, till then what do you think?

Well I think the 8600GTS will hit a lower price point fairly quickly. But since price is a valid point ...

Lets also consider then 2x 8600GT vs 320MB 8800GTS

I think the better comparison would be 8600GTS SLi vs. 8800GTS 640mb

That being said, I think the 8800GTS 640mb would be the better solution for less money.

8600GTS is going to cost almost as much as a 8800GTS 320mb at launch which makes me wonder why anyone would consider buying the 8600GTS. 8800GTS 320mb is going to offer huge performance gains for about $30-$50 more.

The 640MB 8800GTS would eh..own the sli 8600gts b/c 1) it has twice the available ram,
2) it's better

Then I still think that the 8800GTS 320mb would come out on top.

Not to mention that you're not going to have the problems associated with SLi (i.e. Vsync).

Single Card (if performance is achievable) > Dual Cards for the most part. No SLI scaling issues, full RAM usage etc...

8800 will still win due to the 8600 not being able to use all that RAM efficiently because of a 128-bit bus. Or I at least presume so.

SLI only makes sense for achieving performance that would otherwise be impossible with a single card, i.e. the ultra high end. Additionally, SLI has its own unique set of hassles that you want to avoid if at all possible.

easy way to answer: SLI a couple 7900GTs and compare that against an 8800GTS. How does it perform? The 8600GTS has around the same level of performance as a 7900GT.

Agreed. In general two slower cards in SLI are a waste of time if you can get a faster single card.

Three generations of cards with SLI and people still havent learned 1 high end card beats two midrange cards...

The "Cooler Factor" is what they are looking for. The type of guys who brag and boast about their rigs and run benchmarks all day.

actually my main reason for bringing this up is noise.. all the 8800gts cards do 60+ db noise, and thats just not acceptable to me. As far as i know there are no custom cooling kits that i can get for an 8800gts to deal with this problem. So my thought was, get 2 quieter 8600GTS and run them in SLI and hope for similar performance. However, if there are so many issues with SLI.. thats not sounding like something i want to do either.

According to whom?

From what I know the 8800 Series coolers are some of the best for quietness in the high end arena.

If you're concerned about noise then two cards are unlikely to be quieter than a single card.
