So, I just saw a 50 pack of the 3" mini-CD-Rs at bestbuy for about $35. This seems like a good deal to me, but I have a feeling that there may be a better deal out there. If there is, don't flame me, just let me know where that better deal may be... THX.

Hrm, funny how sometimes smaller things can get more attention....

I saw these little spindles, and almost snatched one up just 'cause they're so damned cute, and also they're memorex (which is almost a reputable cdr brand, unlike most of the mini cdr's I see, by taiwanese companies that had strange names like datarite, or luckydisk, etc.). I've really got nothing to put on them, tho' and that's what really keeps me from picking them up.

Don't you have to use an adapter to play them in a unit? If so, do they sell them there too?

Pretty much any CD Rom can play them without adapter... you should see a small ring when you look at your tray. Only difference is slot loaders.

As far as what the hold... 185MB to be exact.

Hope that helps!

~180 megs if i remember correctly. they will play in most cdroms/dvdroms and most cdrws can write them.
exception are the slot load pioneer type drives.

Searching at
pricegrabber
for "185mb" shows that you get a 50 pack for about $30 including shipping from
buy.com.

On the smaller is better theme, I wonder if "credit card" CD-Rs are available. I guess you could always take a knife to these CD-Rs after they're written to make them credit card sized.

Edit: Yes, I'm joking about the cutting the CD-Rs thing.
(I couldn't get the forum javascript smiley insert to work in IE4.01)
Reminds me of how people used to fold the 5 1/4" floppies in half to fit them into their pockets.

Duh, you might just lose some data
But yes - credit card ones are easily found, they are about .60 each.
//edit - well from more reliable sources they are about .80 to $1@.
The sweet spot is the 3.5" CD-RW, for about $1.50@ you have a 180MB with recordable/erasble capability.

Check out a computer show ( if you have them near you) I just picked up a 50pk of Khypermedia 21Min.\185Mb for $25. These work great for putting pics on to distribute instead of wasting a big disk. BTW i'm using an Iomega 16x10x40 (rebadge Plextor) they work just fine.

I know for a fact they make CD's that are rectangular buisness-card shaped, but I'm sorry I can't give you a website to look at. There was a store selling every which shape: hearts, stars, clovers... rectangles, ovals, triangles...

I don't see how you consider that wasting a disk, the big disks are cheaper

I picked up a 5 pack of the Verbatim Pocket CD-R's at MicroCenter. I bought them because . . . . I thought they were cool. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to put on them . . . only 2 used. Don't know about the Memorex quality, but the Verbatims are BAD according to CD Info.

Here is some info about the CD-R's:

I've used some of the 180MB mini CD-Rs. They're cool, but I would recommend possibly burning them at a really slow speed. Even on my old 4x burner when I tried burning at 4x it threw the disc off the spindle. Thought I almost ruined the drive. Even still, they are pretty cool. For the business/credit card sizes, try SquareCD.

Off Topic:
(But related since this is cool, too.)
I haven't updated the progress for a while, but I'm still working on my race car / flight sim cockpit and you can check out the page here.

A have had a few of these (both the mini circular ones and the business card ones) sitting in my drawer for almost 2 years I think (got them at a computer show). They are pretty much useless, so I don't know anyone would want to pay more for them.

What we need is a MP3 player that uses these for media.

They have an mp3 player that uses these. or something similiar to these. The latest Philips MP3 player, the one they just had the beta test sign up for, uses mini-cds.

Just a warning about credit card sized cds and other weird shapes, they make your cdrom and whole computer vibrate like crazy because they dont have even weight distribution. If you think about it, it makes sense because the cd is spinning at several thousand rpms, and I doubt having your cdrom vibrate so much is good for it.
