I've got some options here:

1. Radeon X800 Pro and unlock it to hopefully an XT or XT PE.
2. Geforce 6800nu and unlock to hopefully a 6800 ultra
3. Geforce 6800gt and just overclock to something more
4. Something else

I've heard the the additional pipelines can easily be unlocked on the 6800nu and the price point is relatively good compared to the alternatives.

Just what I've heard.

first off it depends on if you use agp or pci-e. if you game alot id definitely go with the 6800gt with the prices as low as they are- i wouldnt pay more than 300 for one new or 250 for one used. you can wait for the 7800gt which should start at around 350-400 im guessing and will be a little better but if theres always a "if you wait a few weeks..." if you dont game much go with a 6600gt, you can get 'em for <150 if you look around

Wait for the next gen parts. The 7800GT is rumored to be good.

If you need one right now though... the 6800GT is probably the best bang for your buck.

Get the 6800 GT. Buying a card based on potential unlockability isn't the best choice. Go Leadtek if you plan to OC. If not go BFG.

well i've gotten two 6800nu and only one unlocked so i'd say go with the 6800gt or just wait like another month for the 7800gt

Those 6800/x800 pro overclocks aren't reasonable unless you have DDR3 memory. Most of the cheaper versions of those cards come with DDR memory. So, you'll be paying a little more for the DDR3. I would say x800 XL or the 6800GT is the best option at this point.

The 7800GT will be $450 not $350-$400. Maybe after a couple months after their in the mainstream, but it will msrp at $450.

Noob, is right.

I would purchase on stock specs only, but everyones always looking for the biggest bang for the buck so that's why I pointed to the 6800nu (assuming it works ).

X800XL... in MOST cases, faster than a 6800GT, these cards are a killer bargain right now.

I have a 6800GT and I love it... but the X800XL's are sweet cards.

If his buying this late... X800 XL is a no no.

Next gen games are coming as S.M 3.0!!! FEAR, Half life2 aftermath, etc etc.

X800XL only supports S.M2.0 and plus what if the fall back shader is S.M 1.1... not only decrease in performance but lacking the IQ!! as well.

I would wait for the 7800GT.. its expected MSRP of $399 according to the source with the picture of the 7800GT and the 3dmark03 bench, but thats PCI-e.

AGP defitinely 6800GT. And also note that the 6800nu PCI-e is not unlockable.. its a different core (NV41 or 42), only AGP which is NV40 core is unlockable.

You sure? the GTX has already been seen for like $491... Also even if its price IS highier than 400 I think MSRP will be $399.

Alright you are right, but for the $, buying a card right now, the X800XL gives the most performance for the $. I wouldn't argue anything else you say though.

I know what you mean. Those X800XL are really best bang for buck for a while. But if he isnt upgrading for a while the best choice is 6800GT or 7800GT.

Couple of months ago, games didnt matter, but they will with the wave of new games coming out. A 6800GT performs BETTER than a x850 Xt on FEAR BETA!!! (mind you it was running 20 fps i think, still beta though and if your interested check www.firingsquad.com for the specific review about it).
