how often does this happen?

i live in southern TN, and we had some fairly bad storms last night, with quite a bit of lightning, but i kinda don't think it had anything to do with that, seeing as how nothing else was affected.

it worked wednesday night when i used it, but this morning it wouldn't connect to xbox live. i went into the Test Connection area, and it couldn't find my network. it was as if there was no ethernet cable plugged in. i switched the cables from my PC and 360 around, and the PC still worked while the 360 didn't. my PS3 also still works.

only thing i can figure is the ethernet port bit the dust, although it seems like an odd thing to happen.

any other ideas?

Same thing happened to my friends 360, it was an older Falcon. The fact that he was furious one day and threw a futon at it might have something to do with that though...

That's really odd. Of course, the IR receiver on one of my 360s died. No where near as inconvienent as having the ethernet port die but certainly one of those things you wouldn't expect to croak either.

I guess I should note that not only did his ethernet port fail to work (prior to futon) but we tried using the wireless adapter and that also failed.

lol. We've all been tempted to do that. Usually it's my PC. However, that sounds like a router issue to me. Could be that the 360 was being blocked by the router's firewall for some reason.

happened to mine about 2 years ago.

My router and every network card connected to it got fried. PC and XBOX 360 NICs fried, and the router fried.

Happened during a bad storm.

well, that's what i figured, but it was odd that nothing else was affected. my PC, modem, and everything else was fine.

Talk about bad luck, this crap just happened again. :/

Off to MS again. Luckily, my warranty runs out in about a week, so at least it did it now. Makes me wonder if it won't do it again though.

Makes me wonder if it isn't another component of your network.

I've seen "bad" ports on a switch zap NIC's before. Given, its a super rare occurrence, but might be worth considering.

Well, I plan on swapping cables from my PC to my 360 when I get it back, so if it is that, I'll know eventually.

It's weird because I rarely unhook the cable. Since I got it back, I've unhooked it maybe 5 times, and I never move it, so I don't understand what causes it.

Is it the same 360, or did they replace it with a different one? If it's the same one, they probably just didn't fix it correctly. If it's a different one, I doubt the 360 is the problem.

...

My brother works for a cable company. Any time there is even a hint of electrical weather activity there is a rash of calls the following day with dead network ports and nothing else affected. For the customer, the dead port could be on the modem, the router, the (wired) PC/device (XBOX 360) or any combination of these. It's usually only one though. That said, the problem is to the point they strongly recommend that the customer let them install a free NIC during the initial service installation (as they still offer to do) because it costs $35 for one if yours gets fried and they have to send a tech out with one of theirs. I, myself, have seen NO shortage of devices and PCs with dead on-board NICs and I do not hesitate to chalk it up to exactly this phenomenon.

You know, there is a reason that some surge suppressors have network protection.

It was the same 360 that I sent the first time.

There were no storms or anything this time, at least no lightning anyways. But, of course, it could've been that they didn't fix it right the first time, as stated above. Either way, I hope this takes care of it.

Just an update:

Again, got my 360 back in 9 days even. Sent off the 16th, got it a few hours ago. BUT, I noticed they sent me a new console! And it is a Jasper! My old one was made in May 08 I believe, and this one has a date of June 26th on it. Not too shabby.

Ugh, I'm still having the same problem. It refuses to connect to xbox live.

If I test my connection, it fails at the network part and says my 360 cannot obtain an IP address from my router or modem. A suggestion it gives is to manually enter my IP address and stuff. I tried that and it seems to connect to my network, but it still fails at the internet part. It says something about my DNS server not being able to resolve Xbox Live's servers or something like that. I looked over at xbox.com's support stuff, and nothing works. All my settings are usually set to auto on my 360, and until now I've never had a problem before.

I'm at a loss here. Nothing on ym end has changed that I'm aware of. Any ideas?
