3GB is enough for currents games?

My current spec:
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 8M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 4.80 GT / s
Motherboard: Intel Desktop Board DX58SO
Memory: G. SKILL 3GB Kit DDR3 PC3-10666 CL9
Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5450 512MB DDR2 (upgrading to GTX570)
Power Supply: Seasonic SS-500ET
Storage: Intel X25-M G2 80GB + Samsung 500GB Spinpoint F3
Case: HEC Compucase 6A19B
Screen: Samsung T220P - Resolution 1920X1200


I saw the recommended system requirements and in CRYSIS written 2GB Ram memory.
In CRYSIS 2 is written 3GB and 4GBfor optimal requirements.
Mafia 2 written 2GB.
In short, I see that I don't need to upgrade to 6/12GB for now (maybe in a few months).
Although I would gladly upgrade now but it's too much spending (video card, power supply - if necessary, memory).
The 3GB Ram I have right now on my computer can hurt the game experience? Or it will just be more critical for future games require more memory?

I only play Unreal Tournament III, hardly uses 1Gb

In my opinion, 3GB is definitely insufficient for gaming (with games like the Witcher 2 you can forget it). You're going to be hitting the pagefile a lot, which will definitely hurt your gaming experience. Although I reckon it depends heavily on whether you're using a 32 or 64 bit OS.

For instance, Windows 7 64 bit will reserve a large chunk of that memory for itself (on my system it reserves over 2GB), though I'm fairly certain it wouldn't reserve that much on a machine with only 3GB of memory.

Anyway, the real question is, why would you want to limit yourself to 3GB of memory when memory is practically dirt cheap?

I am regularly hitting 3GB of total system usage while running one game. However, I also regularly swap between opened apps or have browser windows opened which usually brings me to about 3.5 - 4.5GB.

So to answer your question, 3GB is enough if you have one game opened and no other programs running. But it is not enough if you do any sort of multitasking or desire the instant alt-tabbing into and out of a game.
