40 oC idle temp?

Asus Probe reports my CPU running at around 40oC when idle and it gets up to 50oC at load. i myself i find this a bit high... I have an amd 3500+ Newcastle but i haven't changed any of the settings yet. its completely at stock...

What heatsink/fan and what case do you use? Those temps are safe but are a tad high.

it is high, but not all that high. My buddies 3500 Newcastle idles at 36c and under load it goes into the high 40's.

Changing the thermal paste will help a ton.

I have a 3200 at 2.6Ghz (260x10) and it was 46c idle, 60c load with stock heatsink. I changed to Ceramique and kept the stock heatsink, now it runs about 32c idle and never goes above 45c no matter what. I ordered a different heatsink, but wont be installing it for a few days.

I just built a A64 2800 system for my mom, and the CPU idles at around 39-40^C, according to PC Probe, using the retail HSF as well. I bet I could lower the temp signaficantly by installing an 80mm case fan directly above the CPU to blow cold air from outside the case onto the CPU. Doesn't seem to have any instability issues though, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

It's not high for stock cooling. It's normal.

I'd say that it's pretty normal. I guess it depends on how warm/cool you keep your room. I've noticed that my idel temps go from 32 to 38 degrees depending on how warm it is in my house, and I have one of the best heatsinks available.

OrangePark what voltage are you running it at? Those temps for that OC are really low.

My winnie is 32c Idle with a 240x10 OC.
