Seems to me that a person would have to be in a pretty desperate situation to have to risk the legal ramifications of robbing a convenience store (in broad daylight) for a red bull and a bag of chips. Especially with the trend of owners arming themselves.

The thing is, they think only one or two could possibly be caught. They're doing it BECAUSE they think there are no ramifications.

These people are just trying not to starve. I say let them rob and rape as they please.

Dude, they have web-capable smartphones to participate, this NOT about someone who's hungry and is desperate. I pass a boat store on the way home everyday but I have (and will not have) the $$$ to buy one so by your logic it's OK for poor 'ol boat-deprived me to steal one??..

No, it's not OK.

The kids believe they cannot be prosecuted because 'everyone was doing it'.

The thing that's getting worse now is the flash rob and assaults where they are not only robbing the store, but their plan is to beat down all in it.

There are many videos showing these, there are also non-black people visible in the other ones. It's hardly a black-only thing.

It's just more of an inner-city thing.

That's almost a completely different argument. Who is dangling the carrot? The business owner? The government? Rich pop stars?

While I don't entirely agree with him I do understand his argument. It's our consumerist society itself that is dangling the carrot. Success is measured here by wealth and little else. We are pushed to consume, consume, consume by the media, yes by pop stars, by everything round us. Now of course the argument you will make is that that's just how capitalism works, and yes that's true. However every capitalist culture puts a different emphasis on consumerism and weighs wealth as a measure of success differently. I'd say that he is right that our culture puts an unhealthy weight on the importance of wealth and consumption. Take a look at some of the Mediterranean countries as an example, or France, or even Germany. Most of these countries have a rich culture entirely separate from their capitalist culture. Not saying that the US doesn't have any culture but it certainly is buried under the surface and it's easy for those looking for "meaning" in life to only see the capitalist side. If you fail in life at measuring up to these consumer standards in the west it's easy to come to the conclusion that there is nothing left to give meaning to your life.

...or a "young, ignorant punk" thing.

It's actually girls doing it too and other 'decent' kids that have been ingrained growing up with the mindset of if someone else does something to better themselves no matter how wrong it is; you should too.

The whole 'inner-city' thing is a moot point, obviously putting together a flash mob requires everyone to be close by...forming something like this in the country would be practically impossible.

"punk" is not gender-specific.

right, which is why I mentioned decent kids right after that.

They see these things pop up on their facebook and automatically think they must be part of it.

There is a lot out there on this mentality our youth has today. It's more of a sheep-herd than heirarchy system in the past.

That what you get for taking religion and the Ten Commandments out of schools. They never learned "Thou shall not steal" because the people that raised them never learned it either and there werent any classes on ethics, morality and decency.

They just relied on gangsta rap to raise them.

Either way, he's right about one thing: These kids don't believe in moral absolutes.

What they are doing is horrible. However I don't believe in moral absolutes either. I don't think you have to believe in moral absolutes, seeing the world in black and white, too be a good upstanding citizen.

The only two people on planet earth to believe in moral absolutes were Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa, and some people dont believe Jesus even existed.

Rush Limbaugh would sell his own mother for a vote, and he'd gladly leave the Jews alone if they paid him 50 bucks.

I dont like killing but could easily forget my rule if someone broke into the house.

I stand by my statement that dangling a carrot in someone's face and then leading them to believe they'll never be able to attain it will lead to anger and angry behavior.

You can't be serious.

Who is dangling a carot? If you work hard and earn money, you can buy anything in a conv. store. We are not talking about M-B, Ferrari, Lambo cars here.

Leading them? Everyone has a brain, able to learn things, makes his/her own decision (unless he or she is mental challenged). It is so easy/cop out to say "not my fault, it is 'fill in the blank' fault" instead of "I am my own man, I accept full responsibility for all of my actions, no one fault but my own".

Someone in this thread even said something about not that bad for a flash mob. How about IT IS BAD to steal things? I guess I am old school because I don't believe in behaving like a scumb/criminal and I never worry about any store owners would shot me dead because I don't plan to rob any stores, ever.

Their whole idea is to have as many as possible, acting as fast as possible. Officers might be able to arrest MAYBE one or two. That's not enough of a deterrent.
Strength and safety in numbers. A school of fish is an easy target for a shark but only a couple stragglers get eaten. It is an acceptable risk for the school as a whole. In the mean time, they can run rampant, eat, shit, fuck, trick/confuse, or do whatever the hell they want.
