My friends PC died, so he wants a new one. Mainly internet and some PC gaming. Actually the only games he wants are Oblivion, HL2, Age of Empires 3, and maybe a sports game. Doesn't really care if the graphics aren't the best, he wants the game playable.

I'm giving him some stuff of mine. So all he needs is a CPU/Mobo, graphics card, and a some ram. He likes the AMD Athlon 3000 (venice) thats on NE for $130. Seeing how this really isn't a gaming pc, should he still upgrade to PCIE or stick with AGP? AGP stuff is cheaper, but it seems harder to find now.

Last time I check PCI-E was alot cheaper than AGP. At least with High end cards.

AMD 64 3000+ -130
DFI Lanparty Ultra (im biased) - 125
x850xt - 160
Some 1gig value ram

total: 500

Overclock that 3000+ and your good to go.

$130 for a 3000+? Doesn't like a deal when eWiz.com has it for less. With $400. There isn't much that can be said about processor performance as the games are mostly GPU limited now. So even a 3000+ on socket 939 is an aspired boost over his previous build. (if he is coming from socket A)

Athlon64 3200+ $120

ASRock m1695 motherboard$66

512MBx2 (1GB) PC3200 STT$66

7600GT PCI-express card$188

That's about $450 sub-total. But, if you want to replace the Athlon64 3200+ for a much less priced 3000+. It can be done since eWiz has it for less..

This is JMO..
