i have a 9 hour drive ahead of me (PA to NC) and i don't really feel like doing it in one day. the Shenandoah National Forest is smack dab in the middle of my trip. trying to decide whether i should camp out or not. it's going to be 40F tomorrow night.

i have a 45F rated sleeping bag, so i think i'll be ok there with some long johns. not too thrilled about paying $17 bucks for the privilege of sleeping outside though.

any thoughts?

Summer sleeping bags are not cool. Theres nothing worse then freezing all night long. You also have to be careful because the weather does lie.

I went discing today in 45ºf weather with rain in a tshirt and felt fine

It all depends on how you take the cold, but I'd think that sleeping bag, plus maybe a nice heavy comforter or other blanket should do you fine.

hmmm, that's actually a really good point. i was still in hiking mode, trying to think light. but, since i'll have my car, i can just bring another blanket.

Will you be taking a tent or will you just sleep outside? Your face might get really cold if you don't have something to cover it with.

i have a tent, it'll probably add about 10 degrees to the outside temp and block the wind, so it shouldn't be so bad.

by the way, i was actually planning of swinging by my old disc golf course for a round (haven't played at all in a year). unfortunately, that course happens to be in blacksburg (i.e. virginia tech), so i'll have to skip it this time around.

That's too bad, today was my first time out this year. The course might still be open (I have no clue if it would be or not, but I'm guessing it's in some sort of a public park or something) so it might be worth a shot. Plus I'd guess there won't be too many people out and about.

it's actually just in a random hilly, wooded area, no park or anything -- my first, and still favorite course (by far). not affiliated with the school either, so it would be open. i just don't want to deal with anderson cooper and the media blitz that has descended on the place.

Wuss - we went camping in 29 degree weather a couple of weeks ago, including my three year old. Of course we had nicer bags than that . I must admit we bailed when the ranger said it was going to be 11 degrees the following night, and 10 degrees after that.

I've slept outside at 20-30 below Celsius. i don't know what that it in Farenheit, but it was pretty chilly. wear something on your head, get some Polypropylene long johns, and for god's sake sleep somewhere sheltered (snow cave, tent, car) also make sure that wherever you sleep, condensation won't build up. don't cover yourself in a sheet of plastic, for example.

PS: don't take the rating of your bag at face value. especially if it's cheap. take some blankets with you, just in case.

Overnight outside in Shenandoah National Forest? No brainer for me, I would be pitching the tent. We used to camp out close to there when I was a kid in Boy Scouts in a lot colder weather than that.

only if you have a car i think. if you're hiking through on the AT it's free.

i didn't end up camping anyhow because they said i had to give three days notice for reservations...very lame. not too upset though, as it has rained all night and i get to sleep in a comfy bed (i drove the whole 9 hours today).

Oh yeah, I forgot that campgrounds have boxes for you to put money in. But if you find an undeveloped campground, it should be free. I've slept in one of those.
