45GB 75GXP RMA Report

I sent in my failing 45gb 75gxp a couple of weeks ago, just got the replacement today....

just got a refurb 45gb 75gxp back :\

there are a bunch of scratches on the casing, some black paint scratched off of one side, one of the clear seals on the top of the drive is replaced with a metallic foil one, and one of the other clear seals has a little piece of gunk under it, looks like a piece of adhesive rubbed off of something....and a scratch one two of the ICs on the pcb
also... on the flexi circuit connecting the pcb to the drive... there are a bunch of scratches in the flat contacts, looks like they had a separate external device hooked up to control the drive or something....

you would think they would at least repaint the scraped off paint, and clean off the gunk before resealing it :\

I just sent mine back today, if they send me another crappy drive they will end up getting that one back too, funny that just when my 75gxp started failing I got a couple of e-mails from a law firm handling the class action suit against IBM regarding the 75gxp's

I heard IBM is bagging their HDD business...that may account for it

they sold the HDD business to Hitachi, and that includes the factory in New York.

in the news yesterday, IBM will lay off "significantly more than several thousand, but less than 16,000".

I think they know they are gonna lose the lawsuit, and with their biz/profits way down, they bailed out of HDD's so they dont have to do ongoing replacements - post verdict.

my gxp60 died after 5 months. good thing i got it from newegg. they refunded my original amount that i paid for it back to my credit card. they were going to give me a brand new one, but they dont carry it anymore

I know the 75gxps had problems, but do the 60gxp's have problems too? IBM replaced my 45 gig 75gxps with 60gig 60gxps, I just haven't installed them yet.

Yup...the 60GXP's have problems too. I had four in my Fasttrak TX4 RAID array and one failed about 3 weeks ago. The rest came out in a heartbeat.

I replace them with four 80 gig Maxtor D740X's (Quantums in drag) and man are they FAST!! Quiet too.

I have heard of the problem with the 75gxp's...and I myself have a 45gb 75gxp...any suggestions of what to do as a precaution in case it dies? It doesn't seem to be showing any signs of problems yet...but I'm guessing that it is inevitable...

try to keep it cool so it doesnt overheat
dont place it adjacent to another drive....that builds up heat

and download IBM's drive fitness test, it can analyze the drive and let you know if there are problems

sounds good...thanks for the advice...I have a drive cooler on it right now...but I think that having a cooler on any drive 7200+ rpms should be standard.
