I have a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 Prescott, 2GB 400DDR dual channel and AGP Evga Geforce 6800GT

When I first made this system I used my old using old hard drive and my old Geforce 3 Ti200 from my old system, only when I got more money did I buy the 6800GT AGP and the additional 2GB RAM.

Now I wish I could just buy a new 478 socket cpu that's faster than my 2.8Ghz, I don't want to go through buying a whole new ram video card and motherboard just because I want a faster cpu.

The reason I don't want to buy new RAM and Videocard is because the 6800GT is still pretty good and plays BF2 and COD4 very nice, and it cost me a lot back in august 2005.

Wouldn't that depend on whose money it was? Pete, if I were you, I'd just overclock that Preshott, but if that skeers you, or you don't have a motherboard with an adjustable FSB, this 3.2 Ghz P4C will give you quite a bit more performance, for a decent price.

I give myocardia credit for at least trying, but is worth trying to go from 2.8 to 3.2?? Other than the 400mhz the chips specs are the same.

What board are you running? I sold an Asus P4P800 Deluxe for $105 on eBay. People are after some of those old boards.

The best you could get would be a 3.4 dual core, which isn't going to help much for most games. A better upgrade would be 7600 GT.

I know they made some 3ghz + HT 478 processors. I used to run one of them for a while (3.0ghz variety with 1 meg cache) - I honestly couldn't tell you were to find one but IIRC about the "top" 478 made was a P4 3.20ghz HT 478 Prescott with 1 meg cache

good luck on your search - performance differences on those chips to yours also would be factored off if you have HT or not and your cache size (but IIRC the 2.8ghz is a 512kb chip)

HT refers to Hyper Threading

save some money on a new PC. overclocking a p4 is stupid and futile.

OCing will give u more problems and wasted time than ANY benefits from the overclock. get a current $80CPU for double the performance

Yeah no way to upgrade performance on a s478 2.8.. even a 3.4EE wouldn't be a big difference.

The reason I made this topic is because I was looking to buy a faster 3.4Ghz 478 cpu but nobody sells those in Israel anymore, the most you can buy here for 478 is a 3Ghz and that's not worth the effort.

I would buy a 478 3.4Ghz Extreme Edition if I could find somewhere that sells them.

My motherboard is a Intel Desktop Board D865PERL which let's me overclock the FSP by 4% at most heh so im running at 2.91Ghz.

Even if you could find a 478 EE where you leave they are more than likely charge you more than an arm and a leg for it; in which your money could have been better spent on just a whole new system.

you obviously need to understand that ghz no longer is the only factor in CPU speed. its all about ARCHITECTURE of the CPU. and the p4 architecture sucks balls. you want the latest AMD's or Intels. otherwise leave your CPU as is and don't throw anymore money into something thats dead already.

If you can afford a q6600 at $275retail then maybe you should get a E2160 for $75, a DFI blood iron P35 for $140, 2Gb of DDR2-800 for $40 and look around here for an 8500GT or an 8600GT, I picked up an 8500GT from a member here for like $50. It's a little more money but, it's easily going to be 2-3x as fast as your current system.

Isn't there a ASRock board that takes DDR sticks for C2Ds? And with AGP, possibly.

Thanks to all the suggestions, I might try to see if I can get hold of one of these Asrock 4coreDual boards even though I have 4 sticks of 512MB of RAM and this board only has 2 for DDR and 2 for DDR2

Those 4coredual boards really suck for overclocking, and IMHO they are also a bit unstable.

For the bottom of the barrel upgrade:

Don't know about prices were you are, but you can get an Conroe 1333-DDR667 for about
$50. E2160 is about $70. 2 x 1GB of DDR667 is about $45.

Pick up a used 7900 off ebay or one of the forums for about $70.

If you are willing to do a simple pin mod by painting together to dots you will be able to get 3.0Ghz easy.

That's $235 for a complete upgrade which will be light years ahead of what you have for gaming.

You should be able to sell off your old stuff for $150 or so real quick. That's only $85 invested total when it's all said and done.

Simply add in a 9600GT when they come out and the price gouging is over, pick up an E8500 later and overclock to 4Ghz, so you will have a decent upgrade path though no quad core support.
