4830 for $70AR...

I currently have a 8800GS 384MB model. I game at 1680x1050 (thinking of upgrading to 1080p or 19x12 soon, however). I'm awfully tempted to get the 4830 at the current price, but is it that much of an upgrade? When upgrading monitors, I think I'd slap another 4830 into place. But would the 512mb of frame buffer be adequate for that res?

Hmm... I think I'm going to wait... but if I'll see ~20-25% improvements across the board, I think I could work a 4830 in and relegate my 8800GS to my HTPC...

Give me some tips!

PS my computer is a C2Q @ 3.33GHz, 4GB of ram @ 1066 5-5-5-15

From what I've read if you go to 19x12 res you should have a HD4870 preferably with 1Gb or a GFX260 preferably with 216 cores so if you plan on getting a different monitor in the near futre I would wait to upgrade the video car as long as possible.

Yeah that's what I started thinking halfway through my post... we'll see what AMD has in store with us for their 58xx series...

4830 will do pretty well even at 19x12, as long as you're not expecting crysis on high. 512 isn't optimal, but 512 does a lot better at 19x12 than people might realize...

If you are thinking about slapping a second 4830 in a crossfire when you upgrade to 1080p or 1200p it should be great. Note you can overclock this card real well. The 4830 runs at a 575 mhz core clock, the 4850 625 mhz core clock, and the 4870 a 750 mhz core clock. All 3 use the same silicon except 20% of it is deactivated with the 4830. You should easily be able to overclock the 4830 to 700mhz or higher. Note doing so may require you to turn up your fan speeds which may make more noise.

If you search back a few days you could see my thread about this. Dirt and Crysis saw a solid 20-45% increase over my 3850 512mb. OC the card and its a completely different story. The 4830 just screams. btw the 8800gs is directly comparable to the 3850, so you should see gains like me.

I went from 8800gs to 8800gts 512mb probably same upgrade as the 4830. When all it's done it's roughly 20% faster. Worth it? IF you spend like $20 after selling your card it might be.

Those 8800gs are pretty powerful once you overclock them. Definitely better than 3850 more incline with 3870. My 8800gs was pulling 22fps in Crysis high settings @ 1920x1080.
