4870 bad driver install?

My 8800gt died and today the ati 4870 replacement arrived. Sincce the other card was dead I installed the ati card, ran driver cleaner, rebooted, then I installed the 9.2 ati driver.

Everything seemed fine but I get to the boot screen in vista (bar with moving block) and then the monitor goes from green to orange and says no signal? I can enter the bios, so I'm thinking this is a driver issue?

*Booted into safe mode and uninstalled the driver...looks like vista is still trying to load two nvidia dll files?

So I am getting these messages even though I uninstalled the driver and ran driver sweeper:

error loading C:\windows\system32\nvcpl.dll specified module could not be found


error loading C:\windows\system32\nvmctrat.dll specified module could not be found

From what I know it probably isn't a driver issue, but a monitor issue.

Yeah that could be it. Nvidia files are all removed now, reinstallled ati driver and blank screen.

This is what I get for switching back to ati after all these years.

If you can boot in safe mode and still access the CCC, then try to go to the DVI panel screen and select: "Alerbate DVI Operational Mode" or try "Reduce DVI Frequency on High resolution Displays". This helped a problem I first had when I bought my Soyo monitor. The problem eventually went away so I no longer need these settings, but I did in the beginning.

I was able to get it to work after powering the lcd off and removing the plugs, then plugging everything back in. Obviously this isn't a fix but at least I know it works. So now I'm assuming a driver issue with vista 64? I'm going to try a different dvi cable as well.

If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to return the card and get a nvidia one.

I think there's something about fixing the monitor's EDID that solves the problem...I'm not sure how to do it myself though.

The Core 216 should be an equal replacement, but I'd really try fixing the problem before swapping cards.
