I'm going to say neither, but if I were in the market for that bleeding edge performance I'd choose the 4870X2.

Microstutter was fixed fyi.

I put neither as I game at 16x10 and my 96GT is doing okay. If I had the money and a bigger monitor, I would probably go for the 280, as I would never buy ATI again....I dont give a monkeys how fast their new cards are, I have no faith in ATI products...AMD ok, but ATI sux....

You can call me a fanboi if you like, I dont mind....

Why do I have a feeling that wont taper out into actual sales numbers....

probably because many new gamers will make purchases based on nvidias stellar reputation of owning the perf crown, rather than on hard benchmarks from yesterday showing ATI taking 1rst place across the board. In dollar figures Nvidia will still win for quite some time, IMO. But that won't make the GTX 280 any faster... cashback anybody?

HD4870X2 because I'm an ATI fanboy, and because it beats the GTX280, and has better AA performance, and heat and power consumption are of no concern to me whatsoever, and I don't know why other people care about it either

EDIT: = (buy a bigger PSU and a better cooling case?)

Neither, I already bought a 4870. If I was looking to buy the uber high end card, it would be the 4870X2 though.

Pricey? The GTX 280 is $225 less than the 8800GTX was on launch, and the 4870X2 is $175 cheaper. They seem like excellent deals to me.

I voted neither. I game at 1680x1050, and right now I have a hd3870 which works great with every game I play.

If I did feel the need to replace it, I'd pick up a regular 4870(if someone releases a factory dual slot cooler for the 4850 I'd consider that one as well).

My gpu history...3dfx voodoo3, nvidia GeForce 3, GeForce4 ti 4600, ATI 9800pro, 6800gt, 7800gt, and my current ati hd3870. I buy what I feel is the best bang for the buck at the time, and right now its ATI.

Where can I order the HD 4870X2 Please? I have a single-slot board. The previews against the single GTX 280 have been impressive and after owning the HD 4870, I can't wait to see what the X2 will do. Also I came from using a 8800GT and a 8800GTS G92 and forgot just how good ATI's IQ really is. No boosting 17% with Digital Vibrance required.

I went with neither. I'm leaning towards 4850CF to make use of my X38. Though if someone can point me towards some good info on this micro-stutter topic I may reconsider and just go with a single 4870.

If I gamed more, I'd go with the 4870X2. However, I'm going with a single 4870 since I'm the casual gamer that enjoys new games and wants to jump on the DX10 bandwagon.

Goodbye green! Welcome red!

I voted for the GTX 280. Why? I'll tell ya...I was SERIOUSLY thinking about a X-Fire platform with the R700 but recently invested in Nvidia's 790 chipset for a pair of my old 8800 GTX's. The launch price didn't meet my expectations (fancy way of saying "Crackhead prices") so I was determined to wait on the R700. Last Wednesday I couldn't resist and bought a pair of GTX's at the new $489 price. If the drivers scale well with the R700 in x-fire I may try a pair when Nehalem debuts.

More like 5 months or so No matter how many price cuts nvidia does, their cards are much more expensive to make so they wont make nearly as much money

Unfortunately I cant afford either atm, and if I were to buy a card tomorrow it would be the 4850... Undisputed bang for the buck king

The 4850 is a great card, but I just bought my ASUS 4870 a few moments ago from NewEgg for a couple reasons:

1. I have a 24" panel with a 1920x1200 resolution.
2. The heat is exhausted out the back of the computer.

I've got only a 550W powersupply, so I don't PLAN on doing Crossfire anytime soon, but perhaps down the road. The 4870X2 is a mighty sexy card, though...

Neither - my 2900XT, although a bit power hungry, still runs quite strong, and was only $129.

76/22 now...

Too bad the polls are anonymous. I'd like to see how many people who voted for either will actually buy one. It's easy to support ATI's $500+ card when you can't actually buy it yet.

Although it is interesting to see the dislike for NVIDIA... A year ago, they were the company with the card no one could beat, now they're the company that has to drop prices on their flagship for it to sell. It's not all due to tech either... The GTX 280 itself is a great card, but NVIDIA has given it a poor image with the initial pricing... If it had come out at as it is priced today, no one would have whined nearly as much, even with the $300 4870 performing as well as it does. The X1800XT was the same way... That card was a tad bit pricey for what you got, but it really was an awesome card that didn't get its due credit because of ATI's lateness to market. It's all a matter of timing, pricing, and consumer perception.

Much of this is shaped by review sites, and it looks like ATI might be playing the mind share game pretty well this round. The early release of the 4850 and the month early pre-release previews of the 4870X2 show they are working the review sites to hurt NV sales (effectively, apparently). I think they can only get away with the pre-release thing now because the previous paper launches are a distant memory. I think if they do it too often, it will wear thin.

I would actually like to see this sort of launch more often. I would much rather have accurate information about cards in advance than have the companies keep everything a secret until they're available for sale.

But yeah, the GTX 280 has gotten an undeserved bad rap due to its initial pricing. It should have been launched for $450 or so in the first place.
