4K monitors at $350 dollars

Should be soon that - Asus PB279Q is still not obviously in stock anywhere but Hexus seem to have got a review copy from somewhere.

Still a non trivial early adopters premium with it at £6/700, but not an entirely extreme one anymore (200 maybe?). A few people seemingly due to be using the basic panel in that monitor and thankfully it seems like a nice one.

Fastest internet in my area is 10mb dsl so pretty much streaming 4k is out of the question.No point in adopting unless i move or can stream 4k with a future faster package. Have enough issues streaming 1080p without it causing hell in my house for gaming with erratic pinging. 768p pretty much is issue free.

My computer pretty much is the only pure entertainment i own, need a setup that simply works so i am guessing i won't be seeing 4k for a good 5 years.

Where? I searched for Acer 4K at Newegg, and it was $800!

It was on sale for a couple days. I guess the sale is over.

I'm sure they are basically the same acer screens although one has gsync. The gsync one didn't go on sale.

I'm 99% sure it was the standard TN panel that most of the 28" 4k monitors use. The samsung was $450 I believe when I looked the other day. Maybe they are just some black friday week sales, but I still hope it's a downward trend on 4k prices.

Saw an AOC 4K monitor for 289 dollars here in Sweden. Crazy. Still didn't buy one, though, but good news for those in the running of getting one.

My criteria for going 4k

- good quality non-TN panel
- 32" min size to properly take in the high pixel density.
- better software/hardware support to run it well
- when I feel 1440p no longer satisfies me

Definitely see 4k as way to go down the road, but at moment, there are more enticing alternatives I would consider, ie, 3440x1440 (21:9) displays.

Although big resolution is nice, I personally give more credit to base black and contrast than any other aspect in picture quality. OLED has infinite contrast and not some measly 1000:1 like in IPS. No glowing and weird color shift when watching different angle. Even the motion is better on OLED, not to mention color reproduction. Yes there are also some drawbacks on OLED, but those are going to be history pretty soon. Look how long it took LCD to iron out the defects. It's not going to take nearly as long from OLED.

I have now 1440p IPS monitor and absolutely hate the IPS glow and color shifts and laughable high(meaning bad) base black. Contrast is ok as it is calibrated, but since contrast is only 950:1, you can't see almost any details in any challenging dark pictures.

I agree with you. Contrast has a bigger effect on PQ than resolution alone (at least for me). I've spent some time with 4K sets and I'd rather have a 1080p OLED. Hoping the LG EC9300 gets down to the $2K range next year...

Of course LG is also coming out with a 4K OLED soon, so it'll be possible to get the best of both worlds. I reckon that model will be out of my price range until a few more years though.

Nope. Like you said, even 1080p is too much for a single high end GPU much of the time, and SLI is needed even at 1080p for 120hz+ screens. 4K gaming is 2 or 3 full GPU life cycles off IMO unless you are just swimming in money.

So Asus has announced a 800 dollars 4K IPS display, at 27 inches, with 10-bit color and 100% sRBG coverage. This is on the back of Dell, which has pushed their 4K IPS display to 600 dollars. The ASUS display has a faster response time, though.

Now, if they'd only drop that price to around 300 dollars or so...

Nevertheless, it's still amazing when you think about the fact that the only 4K IPS display released last year cost over 3000 dollars(even if it had a bigger screen).

My 980GTX's in SLI has issues on 1440p due to drivers, and other what nots...

4K gaming isnt matured out yet... i dont expect it to get drastically better for at least another couple years.


It reminds me of when 1600p monitors first came out.
They required and still do massive GPU prowess. 1600p didn't even become fully matured which is why i think 1440p's pop'd out.

Exactly although the cost for 1440p/ 1600p was rather high when they came out and remained that way for awhile. These 4K panels are getting so cheap that budget-minded gamers are going to start picking them up and end up being disappointed with the performance. GPU tech is really lagging behind.

No, until at least IPS grade 4k monitor and freesync. But still I would go fullhd OLED in a heartbeat above 4k IPS.

Good luck with trowing in it into the trash after 1 year, due to mass burn in. There is a reason why oled monitors does not exists, they are good only for phones (and only the latest gen)
