Hi guys, I'm new to setting up any sort of advanced wireless routers. I had a cheap 5 year old Belkin N150 router that kept dropping connection to my modem (Comcast rented) so I bought an ASUS RT-AC66R thinking it would either fix the problem of give me enough evidence to have Comcast replace the modem. Well, the modem/router connection issues persisted and Comcast replaced the modem with a newer appearing model.
I bought the ASUS router thinking it would last 6 years and that the enhanced capabilities would come in handy but I can not get a 5ghz signal on my laptop outside of 10 feet from the router (Intel Centrino Advanced N + WiMax 6250 wireless card) and even 5 feet away I am at a "poor" connection with a network speed of 90-120Mbps. I have it set to WPA2-AES. The 2.4 GHz band works really well
What I have tried:
Updating the router firmware to the newest version using the auto update feature.
Using a different computer to connect but unfortunately the other computers do not have 5ghz antennas.
Changing the control channel down to 43, to auto, and up to the 150 range.
Changing the channel bandwidth from 20/40/80 to 20 or 40 only.
Setting the radio to only N.
Changing the broadcast SSID
I do have a fat PS3 in the same room but it can not see the 5GHz radio but I would not tell if it came with one.
Can the 5 GHz frequency be this poor? If it is I may just get a cheaper modem or see if the old router works with the new modem but I got the router for $150 due to a Best Buy price error and would like to make it work/exchange it for one that will work if mine is defective.
