So the card in my rig died and I sent it back. They sent me an email today offering the above trade or I can wait till they get a "shipment" in seeing as the card is not even listed on newegg anymore (4870x2) I'm leaning towards the 5850 what do you guys think?

After checking that review I can say getting a 5870 as a replacement would be an awesome deal.
Similar performance, but MUCH lower power consumption.
And it's a single GPU card

Ask for a 5970, then when they say no. Say "OK I will settle for a 5870".

hold out for 5870 or 4870 x2. if they are too far away then ask for 5850 + cash from them.

Are you serious? I wouldn't think a company would ever actually pay you money back on an RMA unless some kind of legal suit was involved. Do you know if that has ever happened before? If so I will make sure my next purchase is from them.

Hehe, this is an RMA guys, he's NEVER going to get a HD5870 for a HD4870X2. I considder the 5870 and even the 5850 superior to the 4870X2 is every way.

If you can get a 5850 as a replacement, then please do, you wont regret it. But don't get your hopes up for 5870 let alone a 5970.

What is this guy a rep of the company? Why don't you trade in your Bently for a Ford Fiesta.

That is the big picture you are putting on here. Yes, it is.

Shame on your for taking sides with the company.

The HD 4870 X2 was also more expensive at time of purchase then a HD 5850 is now. And since a HD 5870 lacks some performance compared to a HD 4870 X2, yet makes up for it with some other features, I'd say a HD 5870 is a fair trade, but a HD 5850 would not be.

on price alone, i do not believe 4870x2's have ever sold for under $300.00 in the retail marketplace. can't say that for the 5850 now can we???

Hmmm, let's see the advantages for 5850 over 4870x2:

1. dx 11
2. single gpu = no xfire issues
3. lower power

Advantages of 4870x2 over 5850:
1. ~20% FASTER in games across the board

Why would somebody who paid tons of money to get top level performance last gen settle for something with significantly LESS performance now? If he was gaming at 14x9 he would have bought a gts 250 or 4850 last time. On a budget this large, the energy savings is minor compared to inconvenience of having to turn down AA/AF or even lower the resolution to play your favorite games imho.

edit: by the way, I'm not "taking sides" here. I understand that the company has a business to run, it just seems reasonable that if they are going to rma the card they give him something at least reasonably close in performance to it.

yeah always push for the upper limit. you should supply some benchmarks (like from AT, techpowerup, etc) of the 4870X2 outperforming the 5850 and possible the 5870. Performance parity is your friend here.

Well I'm not sure how well the benchmarks from HardwareCanucks are gonna hold up. While I do agree the 5870 is more comparable, the 5850 holds it's own. As long as you're playing at 1920x1200 or lower the 5850 maintains perfectly acceptable framerates with the exception of a few games. And in others the 5850 surpasses the 4870x2 most likely due to poor scaling. The 5850 is newer and is more likely to gain performance improvements through driver updates. Just look at benchmarks carefully.

OP, I'd ask for the 5870 as the 5850 is really them cheaping out on you. While I'd gladly take a 5850 over a 4870X2, that isn't the point. You paid for a card and it's performance, and the replacement should reflect that.

Horse hockey. The 5850 is very inferior in performance and the 4870x2 even nudges out the 5870 in many ways. Are you some rep from the company trying to rip this guy off?

I think the problem here is it may not actually be a choice unless he complains long enough. They don't have any 4870x2 in stock and they may never get them (did they provide any sort of date?). If they aren't willing to give you a 5870 instead there's little he can do except complain and keep escalating the problem to a higher level CS rep. Thus he may only have the choice of taking the 5850 or being without a GPU indefinitely.

Moral of the story is getting scarce enthusiast parts is not a good thing when RMAing since there's likely no stock to replace you and companies don't like to or don't have the stock to replace you with new scarce enthusiast parts.
