5870 Crossfire upgrade path

OP even a single HD 7950 OC is better than HD 5870 CF in the latest DX11 games. i would suggest you sell the HD 5870 cards for USD 100 each and spend a bit more to get a HD 7950. smoother more consistent frames and much less power, heat and noise. if you are at 1080p I don't see you having any trouble maxing any game out there.

reviving this long dead thread, Kept my 5870's and am looking at upgrading again.. Of course don't want to get to out of shape price wise.. its been almost a year..

Weird how even after a year, the post right before yours (#26) seems to still be true - go for the 7950, they recently were like $170 or $180 on sale. If you can't find one anymore, maybe try for the rebadge version of it, the R9 280. Or maybe you can find a good sale on the R9 280x, equivalent to the 7970.

Bit hard to get real world performance number between the Old 5870 in Crossfire.. and anything new, but going by VP here (in the stickies thread) the 5870 (single is 132 and about 210 in CF) the 7590 Boost is 211, don't look like much an upgrade to me.. I was leaning to the GTX770 (257 VP) or the R9 (no ranks but the 280X is 259 VP, and the 290 is faster in other types of reviews..) but he 290 is about $150 more.

hard as it seems again for a $400 bill im going to get a 20-30% improvement not huge. It just a bit hard when I kept up the video card where doubling ins real world speed every year, now they are doubling in benchmarks, but in real world performance not even close. Its almost like i can wait another year.. as I must admit IM not hurting. My worst problem right now is WOT with some mods im seeing low 40's on some of the more open maps. I just don't feel like dropping $600 to see a big jump in speed.

those more wise and up to date, correct me, make fun, or advise me Sit again or go for it.. feel the GTX770 or the R9 can be crossfired/SLI in the future.. but appears like a pretty marginal upgrade.

Cheapest are the left over 7950's at around $180 AR. Still great bang for the buck but getting hard to find.

R9 280's around $200.- are decent

GTX 760's around $220.- are decent

R9 280x for $250. with some games is a luke-warm deal


If you are not adverse to used equipment I've seen r9 290's and 290x's for around $250-280. Tempting.

well i went with a 7990, I work In a large IT dept and everybody jumped on the Bitcoin craze here about 6 months ago (i did it a year or two before that and got out when it started to "even" out on money) So there is tons of hardware selling now as they all realize the "free money" path is not so free. Got a great deal, it appears i can unload my 5870's (ebay current prices) for about what i paid) Might even Crossfire a pair.. lots of hardware being pushed at me atm for dirt cheap. My luck normally doesn't run this way.. looking for a new video card and one is sitting in same dept as me. Thanks for all the advice. now to hope this Table sized card will fit in my PC.

Just a short follow up, real world from 5870 Crossfire to a 7990 seems to pretty much more then doubled my frame rate in the games i have tested. 36 to 88-90's in WOT large open maps. SKyrim, is just smooth as butter now.(never did check FPS in that game). again thanks for suggestions.

Get a GTX 780ti

290s in CF deliver 91% of the performance of 780Ti SLI for nearly the price of a single 780Ti.
