Hi guys, I have a bit of delimma. I was planning on getting a 5850, they are fast and offer decent bang for the buck even, which is some what rare on the higher end usually.

My wife got a nice bonus at work and we got a very decent tax return, so I have pretty much been given the green light on whatever video card I want. I think the 5850 has enugh horse power for my resolution, but I plan on keeping the card for 12 - 18 months, so who knows what we'll get in the future. If we keep getting console ports then it probaby won't matter.

The 5870 is starts at about $80 more (thought the Sapphire Vapor-X has my eye at $430 or over $100 more). I like the idea of having more oomph and I'm leaning towards a 5870, but I still can't get the 5850 out of my mind... I don't want to spend more money just to spend more money if I wouldn't notice a difference between the two.

Right now the only game I'm really playing a lot is Age of Conan. My 4870 512MB does suprisingly well at my resolution, even with 2xAA. But, I cannot run DX10 mode with AA as my frame rates are in the teens. I think at this res and with those settings 512MB of frame buffer just doesn't cut it. But, I'm sure I will play other games too, I'd like to play a few good FPS games, it's been quite some time since I've played one, I think HL2 was the last one I played. The other types of games I tend to enjoy our strategy games. I think either the 5850 or the 5870 will play AoC in DX10 with 4xAA, but eventually I'll play more RPG's (can't wait for Diablo 3) and probably try out some other new games.

So if you were in my shoes, hoping to get 18 months out of the card (but would settle for 12 depending on what's out there at the time... but more time is what I'm aiming for) at this resolution with a solid, though not spectacular CPU, what woud you do? It's very unlikely I'll upgrade my monitor any time soon, nor is it very likely I'd jump to a different platform any time soon. Any input is appreciated.

I say 5850 cause I don't think the 5870 is worth 100 dollars more. With the way games are right now your still be fine 12 months from now.

What are the specs on the rest of your rig? Use that other 100 to upgrade something else.

If your wife gave you the green light and you want to go with the 5870 then go for. 5850 is better value but come on... you want the 5870!

As far as a difference in longevity, I don't think one is going to out last the other in terms of acceptable game play.

My sig is a bit outdated, here's what I have.

Phenom 2 @ ~3.550GHz / 2500L3/NB
8GB of Vitesta DDR2 currenty at 816MHz
MSI K9A2 Platinum (2 x PCIE 2.0 16x or 4 x PCIE 8x)
Tagan ABS 900 watt power supply

I think that's all the important stuff.

I guess I should also say that 12 - 18 months isn't a 'rule'. I'll happily keep the card longer if it lasts longer, but I don't know that a 5870 has enough oomph to make that big of a difference that I'd keep it longer than a 5850.

Also, either card I'd get, I would overclock it.

rest of the system looks good. I still say 5850 I hate paying top dollars for cards.

Once overclocked the difference between a 5850 and 5870 is... 5% or so. You will absolutely NOT notice that outside of a benchmark. You will notice a slightly heavier wallet and the warm glowy feeling of having bought the vastly better bang/buck part.

Go for the 5850.

Well guys, I talked to the wife, she read this thread, but despite the comments she told me to just get the 5870 since it's 'just' ~$90 more. When she tells me to go spend whatever I want on a new card, I'm not going to argue with her. I'm sure you understand.

Now if I can just find that damn Sapphire Vapor-X 5870...

Dude why don't you get the 5850 and spend the $90 on wining and dining your Mrs, and buy her a nice dress?

This is a computer hardware forum, no one here has even seen a girl IRL for the last 10 years let alone talked to one or asked one out on a date

Yes the gurus are right. 1920 res is great with a G92 chip ,,, the 5850 will pown. Honestly I think the only people that should consider a 5970 800 bones is if they want to use 16x AA and a res like the one in my sig. As we all know AF 16x is free, ever since x800 6800 days. anyhow... gl let us know...

Hey, schneiderguy, just because something's true doesn't mean you necessarily have to go ahead and blurt it out!

Why look for the Sapphire?
Why not go for the MSI lightning? It uses better parts so more OCing potential.
