Sounds about right.

A lot of people need very large TVs based on their seating distances.

I've been doing front projection since dorm room days

How on earth is 60" too big? And find me a 60" LCD for $1k.

60'' is too damned big for an apartment and it is cheap because it is a dead technology where there picture constantly degrades over time as the bulb looses output until it finally fails. They also have a much deeper cabinet making them even more unfit for apartments. The price is irrelevant and you are simply caught up in the "bigger is better" mentality and using the wrong metric to make your choice.

and LCD/plasma picture doesn't degrade over time??? DLP has a great performance/price going for it. Ok it's not thing but it's still small compared to CRT's and don't weight that much at all. It's easy to replace the bulb on a DLP. Good luck trying to replace the CCFL's on an LCD if something happens to them.

8 feet away should be about right. I sit 9-10 from my 67. You'll love it. Changes everything to see HD as it is meant to be viewed.

-edit-
just remeasured, more like 8 feet from 67.

i don't see the point in DLP anymore. especially with the spectacular failure rates we're seeing in the models made 2-3 years ago.

plasma and LCD have matured enough that there's no longer a large price and picture quality gap.

I'm just going from a friend who is an expert and works in high end custom audio-visual setups. He tells me the new Plasmas, LCDs, and LEDs have such a long life that it is a moot point because they will be replaced before they reach their life. I really don't care myself. DLP picture quality just isn't there in my opinion. They are cheap and that is fine but there is a trade off for that price.

Don't be that guy that has a TV that takes up 1/2 the room.

A 60" DLP is thin, light and allows one to enjoy HDTV.

Don't be that guy that has a 42 or 50" display gushing over how nice it is and then sit so far away from it you may as well not even have an HDTV.

Even worse, mount your 42" display above the mantle and sit 10 feet away. FAIL.

DLP picture quality still exceeds any cheap LCD and most cheap plasmas. moreso if professionally set up.

but bulbs as a maintenance item are bad enough- and most people with DLP's are finding that the DLP chips and color wheels are maintenance items, too.

If the new plasmas, lcd, and led have a long life, and they are new, can we be sure of that long life. It's kinda like these SSD hard drives, I hate to buy one now not knowing how long they will last. Plus the cost is outrageous and will come down as they become mainstream if they are reliable.

I got a 54" 1080p plasma & blu ray player for $1250. It's wall mounted and I sit 12' from it and it's plenty big.

DLP is dead. I'm flabbergasted that there are still devoted fans of that tech. Enjoy your $200 bulb replacements.

I still find DLP has one of the most pleasing images out there. Admittedly there's a certain softness to it, but that just gives it a more film-like appearance IMO, and it has no screen door effect at all, something that annoys me to no end. I have a 4 1/2-year-old 720p Samsung that is still on the original bulb and it still looks great. I would probably not buy another DLP set given the evolution over the past several years, but some of the anti-DLP sentiments in this thread are just silly IMO.

If you do get it, get a warranty to cover the bulbs/color wheels. Will never get a projection TV ever again or any Panasonic TVs (look up Panasonic TV lawsuit).

At least they can be repaired. And they won't need it for a long, long time.

I have a 50" Samsung DLP that's 6 years old, still on the original bulb and color wheel. Should be up around 15,000 hours now.

And yes, there still is a big gap in price vs. what you get in DLP and Plasma/LCD. You can't come anywhere close to a GOOD 60" LCD or Plasma for under a thousand bucks. Best I've seen the Sammy Plasma was a bit over 1500, and that's a 58".

I'd still rather have a good Mitsubishi DLP at 60" than an LG or other lesser-brand Plasma or LCD.

Nothing at all wrong with DLP....if you want a really big TV, it's still a hell of a deal for the dollar.
