I got a 54" 1080p plasma & blu ray player for $1250. It's wall mounted and I sit 12' from it and it's plenty big.

DLP is dead. I'm flabbergasted that there are still devoted fans of that tech. Enjoy your $200 bulb replacements.

Meh, I still own 4 HDTVs and constantly get new ones as a video enthusiast. I think I'm on like my 12th HDTV now since 2000. Plasma, LCDs, DLPs, CRTs what name you.

Do you know what really makes guests go "wow, so that's what HD looks like". It's my cheap DLP in the home theater with proper viewing distance.

At your viewing distance you wasted money and don't know what HDTV looks like.

I have this TV, and I must say that I am thoroughly happy with it. When you see DLPs display at your local store (such as CompUSA), then you'll start thinking twice because it seems dimmer than your LCDs and plasmas. However, the bright lighting that they use in the stores causes this. You're not going to have that same type of lighting in your home. In normal setting, DLP images are actually warm and nice. I tweaked mine using SpyderTV, and I think it looks awesome! Also, this TV is 10x lighter than my 26" Toshiba CRT.

That's a really ignorant and obnoxious statement.

Ignorant? I think not.

If you can answer this single question on telling the difference between HDTV and SDTV at 10 feet from a 42" display then you can make a point.

What will show you the difference between HDTV and SDTV at this distance immediately? The year is 2010 and all, but what will immediately tell you "this is HDTV" at that distance?

No googling, you need to show that you have a clue of which you speak. That whole personal experience thing trumps what one reads on the intarweb.

Good lord, I already gave my personal experience in the panasonic thread.

I knew from P&N that you were a real dickhead. I just had no idea how obnoxious you really are.

As mentioned by others in this thread...some people have gone 5 years without having to change their bulbs.

I just don't see why I should shell out $1500 for a 42" Samsung LED when I can get the same picture quality, if not better in a 60" Mitsubishi DLP at close to half the cost.

Get whatever you're going to be happy with. I don't agree with the whole "DLP IS DEAD" crap. If you like the picture quality of the TV, and dont need to hang it on the wall or anything, then DLP is a great choice for you and certainly a great bang for the buck option.

Apartment dweller here with a 65" Mitsu DLP. Who cares if its 14" deep? Not like I'm going to mount it on the wall of my apt anyway. The PQ is great and the price was even better. I see no reason not to get one given you don't care about wall mounting. If the TV is sitting on a stand of some sort you're not really saving much space by having a flat panel anyway.

Price of replacement bulbs is down to $100 for this set and as mentioned before, at least DLP sets can be repaired for far less than the cost of a new set. Dead flat-panel usually means new TV.

my standard reply to people commenting on thinness of a tv is "How much time do you spend looking at the profile of the TV?"

And if they insist on talking about it further, I mention I have a projection setup, and my screen is a few mm thin.

I'd buy another DLP in a heartbeat when this one finally gives up the ghost and probably will get a 73 inch one. Price/performance/quality cannot be beat.

A 60" DLP is thin, light and allows one to enjoy HDTV.

Don't be that guy that has a 42 or 50" display gushing over how nice it is and then sit so far away from it you may as well not even have an HDTV.

Even worse, mount your 42" display above the mantle and sit 10 feet away. FAIL.

I think most people would rather be this guy than the "I have a TV and two bean bags in my living room because that's all that will fit" person. I see a lot more people that buy TV's that are way too big than too small.

I don't give a fuck what kind of TV you're using, if you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 480p at 10' on any TV bigger than 32", you need your fucking eyes checked.

LOL!! This is true.

I had a friend in HS (circa '99) who claimed he couldn't tell the difference between VHS and DVD. And yes, he was indeed blind as a bat. I believe he was very close to legally blind without his glasses.

The value of DLP has certainly gone down with the dropping of price in bigger LED/Plasma screens but the hate for DLP is pretty weird.

If you're worried about about bulbs you can shop around for an LED DLP (I know Samsung made them). No color wheel, no lamp.

I bought a DLP for my living room TV few years ago, paid 1/3 the cost of a comparable LCD panel and will never have to replace a bulb. It's slightly deeper than an LCD (13") but it's on a stand with my game consoles/cable box/etc so it doesn't make the least bit of difference whether it's 2" deep or 20" deep for me.

I love my DLP and haven't had to spend one penny on anything since I bought it 2+ years ago.

I will admit though that the high end plasmas look awesome, but for $4000 it sure as hell better look awesome.

Exactly.

Who the hell couldn't look at a 42" HDTV display at only 10 feet and NOT tell the difference from an SD picture?

There is no "right" answer to that question....HD simply looks better. Clearer, brighter, better.

Fine. Since nobody wants to step up and answer the question - the COLOR will immediately tell you it's HD. But rarely do people take advantage of the other aspect - the resolution.

Most people with HDTVs buy displays way to small for their viewing distance. A 42" one is almost useless.

The year is 2010, 1080p only with proper viewing distance to enjoy all HDTV has to offer. Color and resolution.

For 1K you could probably find a decent entry level projector. Assuming you have blackout curtains for all the windows, this may be a better avenue to explore since you could bump it up to over 100+ inches if you wanted .... Given you said there's 8 feet, then 80 or so inches would be perfect, and a projector would do that for you ...

I own a 61inch Old school Toshiba Rear Projection set. It's not even an HD set, but, it's PLENTY bright, and has excellent contrast. I haven't noticed any degrading in quality since I purchased it probably close to 10 years ago...

I plan to replace it in the near future, I have been casually rehabbing a room in my basement to be a dedicated home theater .... When that is done, the 61 will either go away, or I'll stick it in a spare room and pretty much not use it except for like, when family is over and kids want to play video games or something ....
