if you could spare a little more you could get an R series thinkpad that would probably fit the bill. you could get an S or SL ( i forget what it is) series but may go over 700 to get a hard drive the size you want by the time you add a little memory to it.

dell has a nicely equipped studio 15 for $749 (probably without shipping) and i think you can get $100 off with an internet sign up or something.

Comes with the following specs
- Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, 4GB DDR2
- 320GB Disk SATA, DVDRW
- 15.4" WXGA Screen, Wireless
- Vista Home Premium, 1 Year Warranty

wow i'm impressed. usually people just say 'someoen tell me what to buy' or thereabouts. thanks neo6053 for actually giving enough details and info about what you are looking for and want to use it for. just to let you know, for some reason those dell links arent working.. hmm the acer one too actually. only one thats working right is the one about acer 4350, compaq CQ50

personally i'd pick dell over acer.
