64 bit XP

I have been thinking about moving up to the 64bit version of XP. Basic question, has overall support of the 64 bit OS advanced enough (drivers and software) that I would be at little to no risk in moving forward with this? I do a lot of gaming and I want maximum stability to go along with performance. If I had to sacrifice something it would be performance.

Not really, if you want a 64-bit system you should start thinking about Vista.

The support still sucks for XP x64, I ran it from teh begining and it was hit and miss all the way till last year.

As much as it pains me to say, if you really need x64 use Vista. A ton of more drivers and what not that work fine in Vista x64 than they ever did in xp x64.

Is there anything special that would need drivers for Xp x64? Have you check around online for drivers for all your hardware? That would be an easy answer.

Xp x64 is far from a tech demo
Theres a reason why its run on workstations and vista isn't.

I would make a list of what hardware and drivers I needed and see if there are x64 drivers. If your hardware isn't supported then go with vista.

The woods are a dangerous place in XP x64-land.

There are many of us guarding the woods in Vista x64-land though; you'll be safer there

I actually had a very good experience running XP 64 for a short time. I downloaded the free trial for my last PC build (because I didn't have a spare Windows OS at the time) and it seemed to work very good. It just seemed to be a very fast and efficient OS.

In fact, I was so impressed with XP64 that I wrestled with the idea of purchasing Vista over XP64 for quite some time because I liked the OS that much.

Driver-wise, I found everything I needed for XP64 (even drivers for an obscure Tascam audio interface/controller surface I use for recording). And everything I found that had a driver for Vista64 had one for XP64 too (there may be exceptions to this, but I found none for what I needed).

In the end I went with Vista mostly because of the enhanced security, DX10, and better "future-proofness". They can keep the eye candy (I actually prefer the look and feel of XP still).

All that aside though, Vista has been working equally as well for me as the XP64 trial did so overall I'm pretty happy with the decision to get Vista.

What a load of crap!

I have it, and have had zero problems using it or getting up to date drivers for my hardware.
I actually prefer it over Vista, but thats a whole other thread. :laugh:

That being said, if you are looking to buy a new OS today, then Vista would be the logical step to take.

My point was more that if there isn't driver support then there won't likely ever be either since just about all vendors are focusing on Vista support.

I'm considering dumping x64 and install Vista 64 into one of my two rigs.
One of which already is Vista64 which runs flawlessly from the get go.

I have been running xp64 for a while now. Overall everything works like it is supposed to work. There are a few minor issues like my Cisco VPN client not working, no flash for the 64 bit explorer, and no 64 bit quicktime support for internet explorer (although there are third party ones that run fine). My HP printer drivers are beta drivers and probably will remain so... but they run fine.

The few games I play run great as well. I would say go for it if you want to load up on the RAM. Photoshop runs like mad with 8 gigs. I can allocate the max 3.something gb to PS, keep the scratch disk in RAM, and still have plenty for the OS to gobble up for what it needs to do.

For me it was a money thing... free XP64 or pay for Vista 64. I think you may have less driver headaches with Vista. I have yet to get a BSOD with XP64.
