64bit mobile athlon XPs?

I'm writing this on a notebook with an athlon xp-m badge, but it also shows "physical address extension" in system properties. So I fired up CPU-Z and found some interesting info. Here is the screen shot: http://members.cox.net/dextrous/ss.jpg This laptop is an HP pavilion zv5320us.

Also, I worked on a friend's computer briefly early in the semester that had similar stuff going on but I did not have time to ru CPU-Z on it. So, whats going on here? Have these existed all along and I was just ignorant about them?

My guess is that its a A64-based sempron that is incorrectly identified as an AXP, because AMD didn't make 64 bit athlon xp's and everything points to it being an athlon 64 except for its specification.

The BIOS of that laptop just is not recognizing the chip properly. You can mod the BIOS to make it recognize the chip as anything you want. I know, I did that on my NF7-S R2 so that my XP-M would be recognized "properly" and not as an Unknown CPU Type.

I think that is the culprit, if WinXP says PAE then it is a 64bit chip.

And the DH7-CG and SSE2 is a dead giveaway, that's not an XP, it's a 64, perhaps a Sempron as CheesePoofs suggests.

My P4 mobile in a desktop is ID'd as a Xeon. I wish...

I think you guys are right and that is what I was thinking except there is one big thing... HP has branded it and markets it as an athlon XP-M notebook. It also only runs at 1.6GHz as you can see in the screenie. So, it can't be based on tbred/thorton core because it runs too slow for its rating, but AMD does not say anywhere its a sempron or athlon 64. It would be far fetched to think that AMD is making Athlon XP's in a s754 package and selling it only to OEMs. I think I'm going to email HP and/or AMD to see what is up for sure.

dextrous, the fact that the chip has SSE2 support points strongly against it being any kind of XP. But I am very confused by what you have there, I'd love to see a follow up from you on this.

Buy a desktop chip

Its better to be unknown, then when ppl ask you what it is, you can say you built the cpu yourself, or it is a government cpu that you got as an award for stopping a possible situation.

Download and flash the latest custom BIOS by Merlin or tictac, they both added a line to the BIOS that displays something like "AMD AthlonXP-M" rather than unknown cpu type. Plus, you may be able to overclock more.

WARNINGS:
1. This will of course void your warranty. But if you overclock or even replace the TIM on the NB then the warranty is null anyways.

2. Make sure your motherboard is supported by the BIOS you intend to flash to. Typically the custom Abit BIOS files are for the NF7-S R2 model only. There may be others, make sure you do your homework before doing the flash or you may have a dead board on your hands.

It does indeed look like a Sempron with the 256k of L2 cache, though with all the different pieces of information there it's tough to say. On one screen it says you're running at 1600 MHz and the other 800. This might be due to some kind of power savings deal, but I'm not sure. I would try the most recent official BIOS from HP first to see if that corrects the problem. It might even just be a bug in CPUZ since it shows you have it running on -1V, which is obviously wrong.

It's a Mobile Sempron which come with SSE2 support but without AMD 64-bit advantage.

But why does Windows XP list PAE if it is not a 64bit chip?

the two different frequencies (800mhz & 1600mhz) is the power saving features of the chip. CPU-Z showed the frequency constantly changing between these two. I have still not recieved a reply from HP.

To sum it all up:
Almost all markings show an Athlon XP including the badges on the laptop and the laptop specs
Windows shows it as a 64bit CPU
CPU-Z shows it as 1.6Ghz (which would be a 2500 - 2500+ athlon 64 anyway) s754 athlon 64 based CPU
CPU-Z also shows it having only a 256KB cache.

Even the sempron 3100+ runs at 1.8GHz. So, by everything I can tell, this processor does not exist officially.

It's worth mentioning that CPU-Z isn't fool-proof. I believe a lot of its information is pulled from lookup tables. Anyway, Windows might simply assume that any socket 754 chipset supports PAE, or perhaps the NX bit is causing that to show up. To my knowledge, PAE is actually only available on certain Xeon chips and requires a motherboard. PowerNow! is almost certainly causing the fluctuating CPU speed readings, however.

It's a neutered Athlon 64. HP had this notebook out before the Sempron was announced\available so AMD just gave them 32-bit only Athlon 64s that are now known as Semprons.
