That 965 BE and 8GB of RAM would be fine, especially if you overclock it, but I'm not sure it's worth it over your current CPU. Battlefield 3 loves CPU speed and threads in multiplayer, so your minimums won't be as high as an Intel system, but still playable with what you have now. To go any faster, you'd have to invest in a new Ivy/Sandy Bridge system.

But do you disagree with the argument that the 7950 is too much card for his system?
well I can see both sides of it. I would probably grab a 7870 with that system but a 7950 at a good price would not be a horrible decision.

was his os ever mentioned cause he does need more system for best experience?

Yea, 7900/600 should be on Sandy Bridge at a minimum... or Bulldozer I guess, if you roll that way. Of his listed games, it really only matters for BF3 though. My friend runs a 965BE at 4GHz and GTX 470 SLI (insert joke here, but I'm serious lol), and he rarely has slowdown issues at 1080p on 64 man servers. A 7870 might be a better fit and allow for his RAM upgrade, and maybe even CPU.

But don't you think it'd be furture proofing my computer for when I do upgrade my CPU/mobo? Save me having to sell the 7870 and buy a 7950 down the line?

When I do upgrade it'll be in the next few months.

yes the 7950 makes more sense if you are serious about upgrading the rest of the pc in a few months.

The Phenom II X4 840 just needs to be overclocked slightly. try 3.5 Ghz for a start. You should do fine. Get a HD 7950 OC. even at stock speeds that card would be faster than GTX 660 Ti OC. With manual overclocking it would be a no contest. HD 7950 is 3 - 5% slower at the same clocks compared to HD 7970. HD 7950(1100) will perform like a HD 7970 Ghz. GTX 660 Ti even at 1.3 Ghz has no chance of matching a HD 7950 running at 1150 Mhz. And there are games like Metro 2033, Crysis Warhead where the GTX 660 Ti is already badly crippled by the shortage of ROP and memory bandwidth. It would be even worse when games like Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light launch in Q1 2013.

"We will definitely make sure that Crysis 3 will resurrect the question again “Can it run Crysis 3?” and we will melt PCs down," he said with a laugh.

the Gigabyte HD 7950 windforce has a very good cooler and can easily cool 1.15 Ghz voltage overclocks.

Obviously the 7950 is the best one overall of the three cards.

I don't know how NVIDIA has the guts to sell a card that is so cut-down at $300.

Agreed, the 660Ti should have been released at the $249USD pricepoint. Maybe some extra for factory overclocked and crazy cooling solutions, but when you start the reference at $299, the factory overclocks and coolers bring it almost into 670 territory which is ridiculous. Greedy Green!

They better release the 660 at most $199, not the $229-249 I keep reading about. $159-179 would be a great deal for those. I'll cross my fingers, but I'm not expecting much.
