And red team strikes!

Not knowing the difference between a paper launch(7970) and a launch (GTX680) is sad...:|

AMD did the same thing they did the last time they launched first.

HD 4890 MSRP to HD 5870 Perf Gain/MSRP increase == HD 6970 to 7970.

I already showed that AMD isn't a saint and charged a hefty premium when they launch first (which they repeated.) I don't fault them since they are a company designed to make money.

If someone is in the lead (whatever metric) they will try to exploit it. I just don't get why people have a hard time understanding that business make money off of us. Whichever is gouging more is based on the markets, which like always - are affected with competition.

Geez, this issue has been beaten to death and yet the same arguments are used with no new evidence/support.

The HD 4870 had a 299 MSRP and started the sweet spot, small die strategy.

No no, AMD is supposed to be our best friend and give us discounts.

Yeah, that must be it.

The point has been about a more evolutionary and incremental performance value ratio on a substantial and significant new node and arch from both nVidia and AMD.

Let me offer you someone that gets it:

Ryan Smith said:
Looking at the bigger picture, I think ultimately we still haven’t moved very far on the price/performance curve compared to where we’ve gone in past generations, and on that basis this is one of the smaller generational jumps we've seen for a GTX x80 product

Fair enough...now where are all those people that were complaining about 7970 price/performance? Shouldn't they rag on the 680 too?

For the record, I agree with Ryan Smith and I also would like to have seen better price/performance. But I don't blame AMD for charging what they could when the 7970 had no competition, unlike some others here. And nor did I ever blame nV for charging premiums for their top cards either.

FOUR months later NV launched the new competitor to beat AMD's price/perf, as they should, they were late.

Imagine if FOUR months from now, AMD launches a refresh and it beats the gtx680, are you going to say that the gtx680 is horrible and overpriced, offering no price/perf gains?

The point here is the time-frame involved.

Really looks like a masterpiece of a card. But what's the point of the 680 now? Imo there's no reason to buy a 680 instead of the 670?

They should let us increase core Voltage on 680´s a little more (1.225V), this would be a great way to create a tangible gap between the two, or make all 680´s 4GB or something, it makes no sense to buy a 680 at current prices.

It also makes no sense IMO to offer a 4GB 670, they should make 4gb available for top tier card only to create better differentiation (Not that 4gb helps much but people seem to go crazy for more memory).

Well, the difference is NV is offering up a very viable alternative w/ the GTX670; AMD's offering is not nearly as appealing.

Sure, consistency is very important.

While, the GTX 670 may offer solid price/performance in the context of 28nm but let's compare it to the GTX 570, an 18+ month old sku that was offered for a MSRP 349.

Maybe a 30-35 percent difference and 50 dollars more.

These types of nodes and arches are so very rare and to receive this kind of performance/value speaks for itself to me.

Very nice chips but just in the wrong price-points.

You're 100% right, AMD and nVidia essentially had the same outcome - they were both surprised with their product. However, and they both launched second then thus they put pressure with price.

Fast forward to HD 5-series, AMD launches first and pretty much destroys that awesome perf/price ratio they created for themselves.

And, this is where you disregard my point by using HD 4870 MSRP even though HD 5870 replaced HD 4890.

We've been down this road before.

To some degree but one may make the point they stayed consistent to their strategies by providing strong performance/value with the 5850 -- especially in the context of executing first with no competition for DirectX 11.

It is what it is today -- at least 28nm performance/value is improving with more choice and competition.

I am thinking about selling 680 for this since WB fits plus I can achieve $550 for 680. Good card.

I know! I paid a pretty penny for a 680 GTX when had I waited I could have had a 670GTX. I'm still happy. The real problem is that the 670 GTX places incrdible pressure on AMDs 7970 to drop further in price. When the 680 was announce it was $80 less (7970 at $579 and 680 at $499). With the 670 GTX at $399 WOW! "The HEAT IS On"

It was actually $50 less since the 7970 was $549 but your point is correct. AMD has been feeling some pressure to decrease prices.

Pricing is a two way street. I may not be entitled to cheap cards but they are not entitled to my money either. Most sane companies put price that achieves maximum number of sales at highest price possible. I feel AMD failed in this task this round evidenced by plenty of stock, low newegg review count, and hordes of complaints since Jan threw launch of 78xx and even today.

I just saw some 670s on the shelf at the Canada Computer store 2 blocks from where I live. Guy told me they have no 680s however.

So those 670s are in stock at the moment.
