AMD did the same thing they did the last time they launched first.
HD 4890 MSRP to HD 5870 Perf Gain/MSRP increase == HD 6970 to 7970.
I already showed that AMD isn't a saint and charged a hefty premium when they launch first (which they repeated.) I don't fault them since they are a company designed to make money.
If someone is in the lead (whatever metric) they will try to exploit it. I just don't get why people have a hard time understanding that business make money off of us. Whichever is gouging more is based on the markets, which like always - are affected with competition.
Geez, this issue has been beaten to death and yet the same arguments are used with no new evidence/support.

Ryan Smith said:Looking at the bigger picture, I think ultimately we still haven’t moved very far on the price/performance curve compared to where we’ve gone in past generations, and on that basis this is one of the smaller generational jumps we've seen for a GTX x80 product
Let me offer you someone that gets it:

Fair enough...now where are all those people that were complaining about 7970 price/performance? Shouldn't they rag on the 680 too?
FOUR months later NV launched the new competitor to beat AMD's price/perf, as they should, they were late.
Imagine if FOUR months from now, AMD launches a refresh and it beats the gtx680, are you going to say that the gtx680 is horrible and overpriced, offering no price/perf gains?
The point here is the time-frame involved.
Really looks like a masterpiece of a card. But what's the point of the 680 now? Imo there's no reason to buy a 680 instead of the 670?

For the record, I agree with Ryan Smith and I also would like to have seen better price/performance. But I don't blame AMD for charging what they could when the 7970 had no competition, unlike some others here. And nor did I ever blame nV for charging premiums for their top cards either.

I think they are too busy gaming on their brand new GTX 670s to post.
The HD 4870 had a 299 MSRP and started the sweet spot, small die strategy.
You're 100% right, AMD and nVidia essentially had the same outcome - they were both surprised with their product. However, and they both launched second then thus they put pressure with price.
Fast forward to HD 5-series, AMD launches first and pretty much destroys that awesome perf/price ratio they created for themselves.
And, this is where you disregard my point by using HD 4870 MSRP even though HD 5870 replaced HD 4890.
We've been down this road before.
YEAH, camped out at Amazon this morning and got a Gigabyte OC for 399.99 - had to tell somebody!

I know! I paid a pretty penny for a 680 GTX when had I waited I could have had a 670GTX. I'm still happy. The real problem is that the 670 GTX places incrdible pressure on AMDs 7970 to drop further in price. When the 680 was announce it was $80 less (7970 at $579 and 680 at $499). With the 670 GTX at $399 WOW! "The HEAT IS On"
No no, AMD is supposed to be our best friend and give us discounts.
