I think the 6800 gs in Europe is a really good card... it's like a resurrection of the 6800 gt... here in Italy a 6800gt arrives to cost 480 euros (in the shop near to where I live)!!! and never under 350 euros online.. it's really bad.. with the 6800 gs costing now a bit more than 250 euros I think this VGA has come back to more normal prices.. and if its unlockable you've got a 6800gt at its fair price... cheers!

Sticky111, could you please give us some proof? I'm probably gonna buy the XFX 6800GS extreme AGP and I would really like to know if the card has 4 extra pipes that can be unlocked!

Can you please post some pictures?

EDIT: There's a lot of rumours saying that the 6800GS AGP can be unlocked to 16 pipes since it uses a different GPU than the PCI-E version! Yay!

look at MicroCenter today . . . in Hot Deals . . . the x850xt is $249 - $50MIR = $199.95 . . .

i couldn't resist

it's the same price [after MIR] that i paid for my 9800xt - R.I.P.- 2 years ago . . .

so now my rig may not be "pathetic" . . . at least for another year.
[of course i still don't have SM 3.0]

looking at Microcenter's return policy . .. there doesn't seem to be a restocking charge - if i don't "like" it.

Hehe... Rollo made you spend $200+ bucks because he called your system "pathetic"!

I'm glad he didn't call my system pathetic... I don't have the spare cash lying around!

"Rollo made me?"

naw, my DEAD 9800xt last week "made me" . . . i am DAMN tired of my 8MB PCI [SIS] videocard.

there is also - AFAIK - no restocking charge at MC for videocards . . . i got a month to upgrade, sidegrade or whatever [if the x1700xt prove to be better] . . .

and Rollo said your rig was' fine' [even though it is almost identical to mine - if a bit slower] because of your nVidia card . . .

he can call mine "antique" now . . . since it lacks SM3.0

XFX PVT40BUDF3 Geforce 6800GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card

Retail box on Newegg for $229 right now.

I've been looking each day til I saw one come out on their site so more sites should have them too and probably around the same price or lower (this is not the extreme XFX one).

Edit: This is the 350 / 1100 one as described by Newegg.

Hehe Now all we need are some guinea pigs to test this out to see if they can unlock it too

To anyone who owns a 6800gs AGP card:
I have a shuttle XPC so space is limited a bit. How big is the card? Dimensions

And is it loud? I just finished making a custom outer case. It's a mesh type material, it really reduced my temperatures (XPC's run hot specially with the nvidia radiatior in there, HSI bridge), but it means my gpu might as well be outside the case in terms of noise.

How do you unlock the pipes do you have to flash the bios or can you do it through software?

I don't have a 6800GS card, but I do have a long history of NVidia cards, including the 5600U, 5900, 6600GT and 6800GT... family of cards tend to all be the same length... a 6800GT tends to be the same length as a 6800NU and a 6800U, but longer then a 6600GT.

I can't remember exact lengths, but I do remember how long they are in order of shortest to longest:

Shortest
6600GT
5600U
6800GT
5900
Longest

Both the 5900 and 6800GT were too long to fit in one of my smaller HTPC cases, while the 6600GT and 5600U both fit into that same HTPC case. I needed a fairly roomy case for my 5900 and 6800GT.

While I don't have a GS, I would imagine it's roughly the same length as my 6800GT. I can't remember the exact length, but if memory serves me correctly, I think the 6800GT was about an inch or inch and a half longer then the 6600GT (I had to get a new case before I could use the 6800GT myself when I upgraded from a 6600GT).

Oh, and I love the performance differance of the 6800GT over the 6600GT... if the GS can unlock to a full 16 pipes, it's worth the upgrade.

yeah i got F.E.A.R. AOE III and Quake 4 for christmas so I was hoping to upgrade to get the best out of them. With that card unlocked will it play those games at 1280x1024 with max shaders, AF and some AA?! My 6600gt plays at about medium settings it can't really cope with AA or heavy HDR.

I have about 22-23cm length ways and from the top of agp connector to top of card about 10cm. I think i might be able to make more vertical height if required but length is fixed. Any idea how that measures up?

If the card unlocks stable (and essentially becomes a 6800GT), then yes, you'll definately notice the improvement.

I myself went from a 6600GT to a 6800GT and there's a HUGE performance increase between the two. The doubling in pipes from 8 to 16 is sure to be the reason. Like you, I played Doom-3 (same engine as Quake-4) on my 6600GT at roughly medium settings in 1024x768 with nothing fancy turned on... Now with my 6800GT but otherwise identical computer, I'm playing Quake-4 on high settings with AA at 1152x864 resolution and it runs smooth as silk. I haven't tried bumping the resolution higher, but I'm sure I could... I can't stress how smooth it is on my 6800GT with stuff pumped-up.

So if you get a GS, and unlock the extra pipes with no problems, I think you'd be mightely impressed.

i actually fail to understand the gs release. Is it just a 6800gt with 4 piplines locked up? Or is there something different in the wiring to make it better.

would still like to know if any 6800gs owners can confirm the size of the card for me.

I don't either... your answer here is YES... it's just a 6800GT with 4-pipelines locked, nothing more.

Nope, it's STILL just a 6800GT with 4-pipes locked up. I imagine the reason for the release is a bin full of old AGP N40 cores floating around the back of NVidia's office that somebody found and tried to find a use for.

From the pictures it looks identical to my 6800GT... that being said, it should be approximately 1 inch longer then your current 6600GT.

meh just get a 7800gt and lock this thread pls
Eh... just borrow a quarter and buy a F'ing clue sh!t for brains.

This thread is about AGP cards... EARTH TO THREAD-FLAMING ST... They don't make 7800GTs for AGP, or does your brain not register the obvious?

We're all so happy of your wonderful system, but don't go around thread-flaming when you lack the intelligence to understand the fundamental differances between AGP and PCI-E. People in this thread are not interested in your PCI-E rig because they want to prolong the life of their otherwise-decent AGP rigs. Go flame some other thread.

Well it's obvious you must think money just grows on trees, but to some people, they may have other cash priorities then dumping an extra $200-$400 dollars (MB+CPU) OVER buying just a video card just to change their slot from AGP to PCI-E.

It's incredibly crass to say such garbage... if you have nothing CONSTRUCTIVE to contribute to the thread, it's obvious you are just trolling.

Actually Nvidia requested a new batch of NV40s from their suppliers to make the AGP version.

What they wanted to do was cut the 6800 Series down to one model. They had a choice of A.) Using the NV42 (which is Native PCIe) and bridge them to AGP, or B.) Order more NV40s and disable 1 quad.

It was probably cheaper for both them and the board manufacturers to go with the NV40s.

Now their is a such thing as a laser cut quad that RIVA tuner can't turn back on. The 7800GT is a perfect example of such. But I can image on a lower costing card that any extra work might start rack up the cost. This may be why they are running them at 350 instead of 425, if they can be unlocked by only validateing them at 350 would mean that there is a higher chance of failure trying to clock it up to 400+ ruining a couple of peoples overclocking attempts.
