I'd also pick the x800xl. That is if a socket 754 pci-e mobo ever comes out. I think the x800xl is the better value. Hopefully in a month or two it should be around 300 bucks. By then I hope to get a decent s754 nforce 4 along with it.

Basically get the x800xl if you can get it cheaper than the 6800gt. If the price difference is marginal ($30 or less) id go witht eh 6800gt if I were you. The 6800gt has ps 3.0 and just barely outpreforms the x800xl.

If the price differnce is small..take the 6800GT......its easy to OC to ultra speeds.

MSI K8N neo 3 is your MoBo them

As for the video card: If they are the same price:

If the 6800GT is around $30 more I'd go for it, but if the X800XL is cheaper than that, go for it.

Go for the NVIDIA cards...they have Shader model 3.0, which the x800 series do NOT. ATI is a waste of money until they offer the R520...

if you only care about games that are out now, go with the x800 xl (if you can find one) but if you want to play games in about....a year...or two, the 6xxx series is your best buy...

I was an ATI fan...but nvidia just offers more with their cards. and SM3.0 is worth it.

Didn't anand's article say the x800XL would be ~100.00 less than the 6800?

what happened?

That's speculation. I don't deal in speculation.

that the best idea i heard today.i might do the exact same thing

the best part is, once i get the x800XL, i wont need the 7000, so i can just put it in my parents computer (doesnt have AGP)

I totally agree, why would you buy ATI over Nvidia?? Once ATI, is on par features wise, then maybe??

Get the 6800GT..

ATI must have realized it would be stupid of them to release a part that is as good or better than all the other $399 solutions out there, including nVidia's $399 6800GT and ATI's own 12 pipe X8xx Pros that go for $399 (or are/were supposed to).

Who knows, because of such a fact, they might be purposely keeping supply low enough that they simply don't or may not ever have a large enough supply for the parts to be sold @ $299 until the competition price comes down that much.

I think as long as the price is similar between the two cards, people in general will lean towards 6800GT since it has slightly better performance and slightly better features.

Therefore, I think the only way ATI can get the X800XL to really sell well, is to keep the price low.

I can tell you that it is very rare for a company to be able to artifically inflate prices by keeping supply low and still make a profit (and I mean overall, since in addition to profit on the individual chips, you also need sufficient sales volume to offset all the costs of running a business, which means selling a low volume of high profit parts usually doesn't work). ATI will want to get as many cards as they can out there, and the only way to do that is to make the X800XL a "bargain" mid-high end card. Currently, NV has the midrange with the 6600GT, and the mid-high with the 6800GT. I only see ATI ahead in performance with the X850XT so I think they will want to get something in the middle to steal NV's sales. The X800XL is their ticket if they price it correctly.

At least that's what I'm hoping because I would pay $300 for that card but not $400 for any card, no matter how fast. I'm hoping that the prices will be closer to MSRP by the end of Feb, but maybe that's still too soon.

Why do you want socket 754? AMD's support for that in the long run is going to be as soild as with socket 939...

Opinions are like @ssholes -- everyone's got one. And so far, you've stated nothing but your personal opinion. Statements like "ATI is a waste of money" or your predictions about the future mean absolutely nothing.

Well, to put you at ease, between myself and 3 other of my friends. We own 5 6800's and 3 6800GT's all AGP. No probs.

6800GT = Almost a guaranteed overclock to Ultra speeds with stock cooling

X800XL = Lower voltages, so not guaranteed to be good overclockers.

I'm just going by what I read over at the AT review. If the XL is overclockable then its more of a tossup. Depends on what games you play the most.

I always thought that lower voltage components overcklock better, since they run cooler to begin with. At least, that's how it works for overcklocking CPU's.

The XL is $354.00 and the GT is $458.00... Why is this even a question or a discussion? I like nVidia as much as the next guy (more in some cases), but I'd go with the XL.

Uh, yes, but generally you're taking the low-voltage CPU (like a Mobile Barton) and putting it back to the "normal" stock voltage (effectively overvolting the LV CPU). They won't overclock very well at a lower voltage, either.

You can't do that on a video card without -- at the bare minimum -- a BIOS flash (assuming you can even find an appropriate BIOS; otherwise, you would need a hardware mod). On the other hand, the X800XLs run cooler. And if you want to keep the warranty, overclockability is irrelevant anyway.

Basically, the performance is pretty damn close, and currently the PCIe X800XLs cost less than the PCIe 6800GTs. With the 6800GT you get better overclockability (unless AT just got a bad X800XL), SM3.0 (thus far pretty useless, may get slightly more useful in 2005), and SLI capability (may or may not be useful, and you need an SLI motherboard and second PCIe 6800GT).

Wasn't the X800XL downgraded to 8 pipes? Just a rumor, maybe a typo on ATI's site, but you never know?

Typo. And that was only supposedly for the AGP version.

Whoa, after a month this thread was revived. I am assuming the OP made a decision on what card to buy by now... at least I hope they did

-spike

EDIT** Take a look at the OP's sig, he has a 6800GT PCIe so I assume that was his decision

ATI's version of the X800 XL is selling at MSRP already a few places (CompUSA). The powercolor and MSI are below $350 so the price comparison is pretty much a moot point. Can't wait to get an XL in a couple weeks...

Cant you get X800XL for $299 at CompUSA and places like Microcenter cell them for MSRP. If you can get X800xL for cheaper, i'd definately get it. Otherwise overclocked 6800GT will give you better performance and might be a slightly better buy. If you can find $299 X800XL though, it's a sweet deal.

The 800XL's run purely off the PCI Express (75W) bus as well which is great if you dont want to spend another 100 to upgrade your power supply. Does anyone know how much power the 6800Gt's use? I've read the 6800GTs PCI-X (NOT AGP) have issues and bugs with their drives still being worked out... Do you guys think that SM3.0 will ever even be required.. it doesnt seem to make a huge difference at all, I dont think its worth paying $100 for, but if anyone knows any games that will be heavily SM3.0 optimized please do tell. Im still waiting for that price drop .. damn u school!

Thanks!
