Want to upgrade my stock HD, and found this, a Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM PART# 08K0939. Hitachi part # HTS726060M9AT00. Was wondering if anyone had experience with these drives.
Thanks for looking.

never used one, but if you want more than 1sec on a battery, i think you should stick to 5200rpm ;P

What a bunch of FUD. First he gets the speed wrong (it's either 4200 or 5400, there isn't a 5200). And the comment about the battery usage just is stupid. It's true that it will use a little more power than a 4200 or 5400 but it's not unusable. .85W idle versus .75W idle for a Fujitsu 4200RPM. If you want real information and not more FUD, check out the datasheets for the Hitachi and a Fujitsu 5400RPM.

Hitachi 7200RPM
Fujitsu 5400RPM

If I were you, I'd get the 7200RPM drive. The speed would make a huge difference in everything you do.

Thanks, I actually was looking at the same PDF...
It would appear that it only really consumes more power at startup, after that it idles at almost the same power consumtion.

7k60
Requirement +5VDC(±5%)
Dissipation (typical)
Startup (max. peak) 5.5 W
Seek (average) 2.6 W
Read (average) 2.5 W
Write (average) 2.5 W
Performance idle (average) 2.0 W
Active idle (average) 1.3 W
Low power idle (average) 0.85 W
Standby (average) 0.25 W
Sleep 0.1 W
Power consumption efficiency (watts/GB) 0.014

No worries, but for future reference, it would appear that a 7200rpm drive will consume just a little more power than a 4200rpm drive.

Now let's talk performance... Will the performance increase warrant the $300+ price tag for one of these drives?

Depends on how bad you want that performance. Will it make a difference? Heck yeah! But as a comparison, I have that Fujitsu 5400RPM in my Dell Latitude C840 and it's plenty fast. I play games, do software development and I would say I get my use out of the hard drive. If it were faster, I would definitely notice it but I don't think I could justify spending $300 just so I can compile my apps 2-3 seconds quicker. I have a laptop for portability reasons, not for it's quickness. If performance were what I was after, I'd have ditched my laptop and gotten a dual P4 with a SCSI 15K RPM drive for the same price.

Well, seeing that I have a Serial ATA 10,000rpm drive in my desktop, my lappy doesn't have to be the fastest on the block, but it sure would be nice. What exact model are you using in your laptop?

There are two different models of that drive, the one you have chosen from newegg is not the better of the two. You really want the Travelstar E7K60
even lower power consumption, better shock protection, and lower heat emissions. Link To E7K60

According to the people of the Dell board, the 7200RPM HD does not produce a significan amount of heat more than the 4200 rpm

Faster transfer speeds and seek times have actually decreased battery usage, giving overall longer battery life (only a few minutes but more is more). This drive is a godsend for anyone who uses any disk intensive apps on a laptop.

I have one in my T40p, it's very good. Quiet, fast and good battery life. It's actually quieter than my old 40GNX 5,400rpm in my T30. There is nothing not to like about this hdd, buy it if you can afford one, you won't regret it.

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my IBM/Hitachi 7K60 drive. It should be here Tuesday/Wednesday. I'm going to put it in a Coolmax USB 2.0/IEEE1394 drive enclosure, Ghost my existing 30GB drive onto it, and then pop it in my laptop and use the old drive in the enclosure as secondary portable storage.

All I can sayt about the thing is WOW it's fast make a big difference
I can't tell its any louder than the 80g 4200 and I can't tell it gets and warmer
so all in all I am very very happy.
