75 GXP 45gb (READ INSIDE)

A loud crackling sound, while the sound continues, the computer freezes. And in the event viewer this message:

The driver has detected that device \Device\Scsi\Ultra1 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may result.

Is my hd goin' to heaven?

The 75 GXP 45gb was the one that so many have reported problems with.

Yeah, backup ASAP and then use it for as long as you can. Just not with anything important.

I'l backup as soon as possible, maybe buy a second hd and run my os from that.

The 60GXP replaced the 75's. Haven't heard of any problems with those.

The 60Gxp's just came out. Anyhow, we won't know until the masses start giving their impressions on the forums. However, I WILL say this. BAck up your muy importante data and do it now! . Seriously, that is the telltale sound that 95% of the peeps report before a breakdown of the 75GXP series (not just the 45 gig series...at least as seen from the storagereview.com forums). Good luck dude! This was EXACTLY the fear that swayed me into getting a lesser performing drive in the Western Digital 400BB 40 gigger.

IBM's Deskstar, especially the made in Hungary 45Gb 75gxp, has suffered an unacceptable failure rate, read all about it:

It doesn't mean that ALL of them are crappy, but better be careful than sorry.
And whatever hdd you have, it might just die on you any moment, so backup regularly.

I've had 2 75GXP 45gb's fail in a 2 week period... Kinda odd. Yay for hard drives that sound like lawnmowers, that's how I know when it's goin down.
