I strongly suggest 939 over 754. Even though the 754 is more powerful now, the 939 is AMDs new flagship socket that will have the most longevity unless all you care about is the present, 939 is the way to go.

Yeah, but I believe I did the figuring for this in another post. He can either put in less money now and get the same amount of power as 939 today and then upgrade to nforce4 939 when it's as cheap as nforce3 754 is now down the road, say two ot three years. Or he can put in more now and then upgrade to nforce4 later and it will be the same or maybe less. But it most likely will be around the same amount of money. 939 is for bragging rights of having the bigger number on your pc case, no offense. I'd rather have pci-express, SLI, and dual-core, dual-procesor or whatever.

It doesn't really matter. IF your upgrade cycle is years then you will be getting a new mother board anyways. If you upgrade every couple of months then well you upgrade every couple of months lol which you obviously will be getting a new mobo at some point. Just choose whats in your budget. I got a skt 754 because I bought it for less than my I sold my old AXP for on a WICKED deal. Will I upgrade to a skt 939 some time soon? maybe depends on my budget. I have had 4 CPU's and 4 mobo 's in the last 3 years in my main rig alone so its entirely possible.

Go with what fits your budget. Which if you wait a couple of weeks you should be able to get a nice cheap 90nm 939 chip for a nice price.

Sorry, side note: caz67, I was noticing your sig and saw that you got a 172x. I was considering getting one, but havent actually seen one in person. How is it for gaming? Hows the clarity? I've read a lot of mixed reviews. A lot of LCDs I've seen at stores seem a bit blurry, dunno if thats the case for 172x.

754 if on a budget, 939 otherwise.

I went 754 and I'm sure my rig will be just fine until my next big upgrade, probably in ca. 2 years. I chose 754 because:
- with A64 3200+, it was clearly cheaper;
- 939 has no PCI-E (SLI) yet;
- I didn't want Neo2 Platinum to be honest.

IMHO, 939 for a budget is still off in the horizon. As the new flagship socket, alot of changes will be done to it, SLI, PCIe, and within a year or 18 months, DDR2 (1066 and above will begin to pull away from DDR). I tend to buy budget systems that are still capible, sig stands evident.
And I can't catch the minor upgrade bug either. Nothing to upgrade, except RAM and GPU . . . but hey, those can wait.

I'm very happy with my Chaintech VNF-250 motherboard (paired with an A64 2800+ Clawhammer) that is overclocked to 2.3ghz using 2-512mb Corsair XMS3200LL-PLT

BIOS version is 3/04
Memory Settings is by SPD (2-2-2-5)
Memory setting is at 166mhz with HTT = 255.1mhz, multiplier = 9, memory frequency: 208.9mhz

whats better for overclocking, the clawhammer or the newcastle? which core comes in the mwave.com combo pack with the far cry game?

and about overclocking the 64, where is a good place to read about all the details of the a64? htt, memory setting, memory freq,etc. But at a "noob" level, easy to understand.

I'd go S754

all the performance for 1/2 the price.

no point in going 939 right now... (I went 754 last month or so)

I wouldn't upgrade my mobo nor cpu for atleast two years, possible three. By then, the new 939 mobos would have alot more features, pci-e,etc and alot cheaper by then.

cheaper....maybe....nut nforce 4 socket 939 with pci-ex will come out in one/two weeks. OK..will be announced Anyway SOON they will be here.

And he says he doesnt want to upgrade further for maybe 3 tears....why then not wait a month (or two) and get s 939 nforce WITH pci-ex and NOT some dead-end like socket 754 ??

Again: socket 939 and pci-ex is literally around the corner.

Bad advice given here....IMHO

Because then, it will be so overpriced and basically he's on a budget, so S754 will benefit him the most for price, and performance which is almost if not exceeding the the performance of a S939
