Looks like I'm not alone on this but...

Built a system on MSI 915P Combo board w/ INTC 775 540J. Idles at 58c, but when using processor intensitve aps, it immediately jumps to 80c+. Happens when ripping to iTunes, and in UT2004 settings screens for example. What to do? I'm considering replacing the heatsink/fan and thermal interface with a higher quality sink/fan and compound. Any suggestions?

yeh, i'd get a new heatsink/fan.. ventilation isnt to be overlooked though, my pc without any case fans has mobo temp of around 30C, my antec with 2 80mm mobo temp around 20C

Make sure the HS fan turned on/running properly. If you're decide on reapplying your heatsink/fan, clean the HS surface/back of CPU first before applying a new thin layer of thermal paste on the CPU die. If you're reinstalling the stock HS, make sure the clamps are unlock before locking the four corners of the heatsink onto the CPU (press two at a time, in a 'criss cross' pattern to avoid unbalanced pressures).

I'm guessing you have stock HSF and those are your CPU temps? If so, your CPU is running a 'little' too hot. Try to stay beneath the throttle temps (75C). I'm currently running UT2004 at 50-52C load with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 HSF. ACF7 produces a lot less noise when compared to stock, (*Directron has it for only $22).

The thing is you shouldn't have top when you are running stock.....The stock hsf should be fine, with conventilation wisdom from a company without its head up its arse.....Case cooling is a must evidently and looking at the rate of heat threads regarding this I would say get water cooling cause summer going to be a biatch!!!!

I'm not sure what heatsink/fan combo to recomend to you. I could not get my 3.4ghz LGA775 prescott to run under 70c with any air cooling solution, including a thermalright XP-120, with artic silver 5. My 3.2ES @3.6ghz, on the same motherboard, with the same heatsink and fan ran at 63c tops after 24hours of prime95. I had to go to water cooling to keep my 3.4 from throttling. My guess is you have a D0 stepping, as it seems most of the people with unreasonable temps are using D0 LGA775's. I actualy e-mailed Intel, but they haven't helped at all, 2 automated messages, and a human response all linking to the same wepages about using thermaly advantages chasis, and keeping system temp at 38c or below, apperantly not actualy bothering to read the e-mail showing that my case temps are below 38c. In any case, I am using the thermaltake bigwater liquid cooling now, and running happily at 3.9ghz, with load temps in the low 50's, which certainly seems high for a liquid cooled system, but now stable with no more throttling at least. A tad bit rediculous needing a $160 cooling system, to keep a $230 chip stable..so my best advice..ditch the prescott, and get an A64..

I just got my 540J set up this week and I'm not having that issue. Mine idles at 33c, and peaked at 62c while playing World of Warcraft last night. Don't know what kind of ventilation you have in your case. I've got an antec tower with four 23cfm fans (two in front and two in the back). I'm also using a thermaltake heatpipe cooler (90mm funneled fan). I was surprised at how cool it runs after reading all the nightmarish prescott stories...

I've been worried that the temp reading it's giving me is terribly inaccurate, but the air coming out of the rear fans is noticably cooler than the ambient room temp. I read somewhere that, with a supporting mainboard, the J series lowers the voltage while the proc is at idle to help with this problem, so maybe that's what's going on.

I think it's safe to say that you shouldn't be idling over 60c...

I've got the Abit AA8XE mainboard

Upgrade the case cooling, and get a better HSF.

In my opinion of course (i had a problem throttling on my 3.0E S775 with stock cooling, its a terrible cooler).

This is a pretty lame comment...try comparing apples to apples here...You admittedly are not running stock hsf and have 4 case fans (average for p4 users no less but above average for A64 users)......It is likely he like most users and cases sold have 2 case fans not including the power supply....If you had 2 case fans and stock hsf yo uwould likely be in the 70's as well...

Overall my comments about INtel and how pathetic this is holds....No wonder they tried to push BTX...I wonder when water cooling will be stock cooler.....

Stevy, if you are using the retail heatsink and fan, then you may try contacting Intel for a replacement. They will send you an e-mail with a bunch of links, to thermal advantaged chasis and blah blah blah, but if you keep responding letting them know that you've tried the suggestions, and your case temps stay at 38c or below, they will give you a phone number to call and get a replacement chip as long as you got a retail chip thats under warantee. I have 2 other prescotts, that even at the same speeds, don't get anywhere near as hot as my 550, so it looks to me like there's just some that won't run cool at stock speed, with even a high end air cooling solution.

Lame?

How do we know what I'm comparing here? stevy99 never mentions how many fans he's got, or what kind of heatsink/fan he's got on his processor. I've got four low speed 80mm fans, whereas most pc cases come with two higher powered fans. I'm comparing temps, and offering my setup as a point of comparison, as we both have the same processor I believe that my comment is legitimate.

I retract nothing.

I have a single 120mm fan+a ps exhaust fan and a dell heatsink (prob standard intel) and i'm at abt 70C. You really need a good HSF, and although you have 4 fans, have you tried changing their conditions (exhaust and intake)?

Well, I didn't think I was doing anything special. My heatsink/fan is the Thermaltake Silent 775- was $35 from Newegg with free shipping at the time. Compared to Heatsinks I've purchased in the past, seemed like an inexpensive solution and I wasn't expecting much... combined with my Arctic Silver 3, it seems incredibly effective and I recommend.
