A few weeks ago, I helped a friend order a desktop system from Dell. He's mostly a business guy, but he does enjoy playing CS. When the video card options came up, he balked at "upgrading" to a $150 video card. He said, "Who spends $150 on a video card?" I said, "Some people buy two $600 video cards and run them together." He was flabbergasted. But this same guy just bought a $35,000 motorcycle to occasionally ride on weekends. In other words, it all comes down to finances and priorities. While we're certainly all free to criticize each other for misplaced priorities, we should be aware that our personal perception of value is not universal.

Comon, where's the fun in being reasonable and all? Rollo enjoys laughing at everyone who doesnt spend top dollar for top-end video cards, and I enjoy laughing at those who do.

I seriously want to slap you. The 7800GTX is worth every dollar. I know because I have one.

Only because you paid $600 + for it, LOL.

It's all a matter of what you're willing to spend on your hobby. Obviously the market will bear a $600 price on the 7800GTX, so MANY people must be willing to spend that.

Not everyone wants to live with the much lower level of performance and image quality you're apparently satisfied with?

Man if you had a brain I think you'd take it out and play with it.

Since you can buy this same card for less than $500.00 it seems stupid for the people who paid $600.00 for it 10 days ago doesn't?

Price, like everything else is relative

I spent 600 a pop

X2

Worth every penny to me

But I can see why someone wouldn't want to spend that money

If you're referring to the Dell deal then you gotta add tax to that buddy. So people should feel stupid for buying their card 10 days ago for $600 when it can be had for ~ $550 now huh? So I guess those who buy today should feel stupid next week if it's $525 and so on and so on.

I honestly think these arguments come from people with no jobs. I blew more than $75 tonight just hanging out and having some drinks downtown - should I feel stupid too? When you attempt to ridicule someone who has spent their own money on something that they want it just reeks of jealousy and is truly sickening. Especially, as noted above, the ridicule comes from people who have overpriced GPU's of their own.

OMFG! You should feel STUPID!!!!!!
You could have bought a whole BOTTLE of Old Goatwhiz for $9.99, got just as drunk, and had $65 left over to buy three cases of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese to eat for two months!

WTH were you thinking?!?!?!?!?

Don't worry Creig, I also saw the backhanded condescension/insult of Rollo's post but if he chooses not to see it, oh well.

Although Rollo's statement seemed like a backhanded insult, it was really just a statement of fact. The 7800GTX offers performance, image quality, and settings that no other card can match right now. And this is coming from someone who had only used ATI cards since the release of the 9700Pro. because I wasn't swapping until a card was released that truly beat what I had.

After getting the 7800GTX and putting it through it's paces, it really is as good as people say it is, given that you are running at high resolutions with the eye candy turned on. If you are running at lower resolutions (1280 or lower) then you won't see as huge a gain.

But Rollo was right on it with his statement, that was just that. A true statement.

In other words, the truth hurts.

OK then, wow, what a response...Thanks for all the heated debate.

A couple of things...

I have a credit a Bestbuy, so regardless of how good or bad they are, I have the money sitting on a BB card and I want to spend it on a PCI-E card...and I have chosen 7800GTX.

Some people mentioned that it is available from BB, some say it isn't. I'm just looking for some help to locate the card. Should I go into the store? I tried online and you can't order it and their Telesales people can't even pull it up in their order system. I noticed that you can't even do a seach on the web for it...the only way I found it was in a link from BFG.

If anyone knows of a good way to find it...at the dreaded BestBuy...I would appreciate the help.

thanks

it'll be back up for sale on bestbuy.com. They pulled it off the site after the first batch sold out and it's back up now with the "coming soon" tag

I've never paid tax on a computer part in my entire life. I can find many places with GTX's for less than or equal to $599 with no tax and free shipping. Where is your sub $500 no-tax GTX?

And how about countering my point instead of resorting to infantile insults. Insecure little brat

Ok...I work at Best Buy...couldn't catch it on the web while it was there. Here is the current standing on the card.

Limited availability online
Not in stock at our main warehouse
Current eta at the warehouse is 7/22
Not available for special order in store (yet, should be when it is in stock in the warehouse on 7/22)
At the moment, it will NOT be carried in our stores, but of course that might change when they see how popular it is

Hope that helps everyone...just make sure you keep watching the site for it's availability. I ended up saying screw it and got one from ZZF because as an employee...if you purchase from the net site...you can't get the employee discount (that sucks ass!)

Rollo, you're the one who should feel stupid, because with $65 you could've bought enough Ramen for two YEARS*--and that price includes tax and shipping!

You turkey.

$464 + 7.25% sales tax = $497.64 from Dell.

It wasn't an insult, it was an assessment of your knowledge based on your post and your reply only reassures me that my assessment was correct.

Umm, no. I was merely pointing out the stupidity of paying $600 for a video card that can be found for less than $500.00

I've owned 4 6800s, so I wouldn't exactly say I worship ATI.

Do you realize how sad that is? Calling people stupid for what they paid for things?
A. It's their money.
B. If they have $600 for a video card they're likely not "stupid".
C. Gee, I bet you've bought something in your life that somebody else bought cheaper the next day.

The only "stupid" one here is the person calling others names because they didn't choose to wait for a cheaper price on a product they wanted.

Well dont you think it mainly stems from jealousy?

In the scheme of things, does $100 or $200 matter? No. Its not that much money and I'm sorry to break it to you poor ass schmoes.
Its called work.. and if you dont make good money its called school.

I pity the guys making fun of people who paid more, because more than likey they are the ones with a lack of income.. not the guys dishing out $600 per card... those guys prob have a Lamborghini in the garage as well, a trophy wife and a 3 story house with a pool in the back.

No, my whole arguement was based on yours and other's opinion that $600.00 was a fair price for a 7800GTX. It clearly isn't when the card can be had for $500.00.

It's been my experience that it doesn't take much intelligence to fill out a credit card application.

You seriously don't value researching a $600 purchase and finding out you can get it for $500? You wouldn't enjoy finding a $100 in your pocket you didn't know about?

I don't know if you've ever noticed, but wealthy, self-made people are the ones who are careful with what they spend.

$600 is a fair price for the 7800GTX. As others have noted GF2 Ultras were $499 at first. Gee, you think years later a card can launch at a $100 more?

The fact that competition has brought prices down to the $530-$550 you can find them at a few places is a testament to nVidia bring the product to market in quantity.

Anyone else remember paying WAY more than MSRP for Phantom Editions last year, if you could find one, for months?"
